I have a 51 baby Lincoln 121" wb 4 door, has anyone installed a 472 cad in one with a stock frame? every one I see with the caddie motor has a different clip or whole frame/floor pan swap. If you have done one or seen one.... please help, I have a 68 472 rwd motor, which manifolds did you use? steering issues? which pan eldo or rwd etc etc thank you in advance

I attempted to drop one into my old 51 merc but the rear steering of the factory merc frame was way into the oil pans rear sump and I did not want to do a big firewall notch or oil pan mod at the time. The manual merc steering box also was in the way.

I tossed in an early sbc 283 with a trans a dapta kit to the merc 3 speed and called her done.

I would say a healthy oil pan sump rebuild to make the pan really wide and a sump tube re position would be the first problem. The steering box might require some headers, but not 100% sure.

    Good luck.

You might check with the specialty cad shops...perhaps they keep track of swaps they encounter...emails are cheap.

Great choice of engine imop that is so over looked. I have only put a few into merc but with your baby lincoln's longer front end should make it easier. You will need to get a rear sump pan and pick up from MTS as the Eldo rear sump is to deep. The steering box will be a tight fit but due to the Cadds front oil pump & fillter you will have to raise the engine up more than most engine's to clear the stock cross member simaullar to what you have to do when installing a 429/460 Ford or hipo 302 351 Ford In a merc. You usally have to slightly raise the opening in the firewall and slightly rework the transmission cover but i bet on your baby lincoln it will not be needed as the engine can be moved more forward. Also your baby lincoln should have a the stronger dana 44 rear axle so if you keep your foot out of that big caddy the rear end should handle it.

Okay a couple more quick questions. Is four-door mercury and Lincoln side trim the same? And will 51 Mercury taillight lens fit in 51 Lincoln housing? Thank you in advance

My avatar started out as a baby lincoln, now has 66 t-bird frame with 428/aod! The stock frame with stock steering make it a challenge to install big engines.

  8. Yes, the original steering etc will cause problems.
I put a whole Jag front clip in when I put my caddy 500 in.
Still had sump problems but steering was easier to deal with.
Mine is a '49 Lincoln also.
