So I am looking at buying a car in Texas that has a Replacement ID Number tag riveted onto the body. My customer says he has a title for the car which I would need to have in my hand before a deal was made of course. Does this mean the car was salvaged or totaled at some point? I'm actually really after the Art Morrison chassis, the Baer brakes and the Currie rearend that the body sits on. The body is a bonus if it is worth messing with. Does a replacement ID tag make the car unsellable in the future or make it worth less money if I restored it?...correction....built it as a street rod? For the record the body looks to be straight and in good shape just by looking at it. Thanks Why would the car have a replacement tag in the first place?
This replacement tag ,more likely was caused by the Art Morrison chassis. The stock frame no doubt, carried the VIN/serial number. ..........................Jack
The 40 Chevy I built has a Texas issued replacement tag on it. The original tag was on the section of floor that was rotted out and was long gone. Had to go thru the process of getting vehicle inspected by the auto theft task force, show receipts on the car, the motor, trans etc. It could also be the way Kansas puts their numbers on constructed vehicles.
I don't think that a replacement tittle on a 100 point restoration would be a good thing. I have a car that I has a legal a title on it, but I have modified it so much that is difficult to determine what it is. The panels that hold the VIV's have been relocated from their original locations so I am having it inspected by the state police to make sure that I will not have any problems with a cautious policeman, or when it is time to sell it. I will probably end up with a new replacement VIN.
That looks very much like the vin tag given to me after my 72 truck was recovered. Perp had done away with the original vin. Rebuild are salvage titles usually state so on the title. If wanted it I see no reason not to pull the trigger.
I would think with a different frame or motor that the tag would be a big bonus.Less hassle with the law trying to read the old frame numbers.I don't know about other states but Kentucky will issue one for a car that the vin is lost or unreadable .If it is a salvage or rebuild should be stated on the title.
California has a similar tag - commonly referred to as a "Blue Tag" They can be issued for many reasons. Theft recovery where VIN was destroyed or altered, Replacement frame, numbers that are no longer legible, custom builds etc. happens on Motorcycles all the time here. Hell even my open trailer has one. No Big Deal
And--it is issued by a state, the only really valid and legal way to put a new serial on a car...unlike a purchased title that really belonged to another car, do-it-yourself stampings, etc. Legally, it is as unassailable as an OEM title. It would only be undesirable on a restoration, where it would simply look wrong.
As always the HAMB is a source of reassurance and good information. I really trust the guy I am getting the car from and he has the kind of money that would make it ridiculous for anything shady to be happening with the car. I think I am going to try and make a bad ass street/drag car out of it. I will post more after I pick up the car. Thanks for the info...
