Ignition problem - I've driven my '50 across America and decided to do a minor tune-up. Cleaned and gapped the plugs, reset the points to 0.20 and put everything back together. Now no spark at the plugs. I put in our spare (new) cap and checked the two small wires to the distributer, both good and solid. Any ideas?
first, .20 is two hundred thousandths. Do you mean .02 which is twenty thousandths? Ok, if you just wrote that wrong, then the first thing I would do is to really see if the points are opening. Second, would be if there is spark from the coil. Take the wire off the middle of the cap and check for ground.
Install rotor ? Those older delco dizzys has an insulated post that serves as the make/break to the coil terminal , it also serves as an anchor for the point return spring and condenser lug.,easy to get things out of place and ground the points., ask me why I know this. There was also a special nut driver to tighten the outside "nut".
first clean the points. Check for voltage at the points contacts. May have pinched a wire . Has this been converted to 12 volts?
What are you working on???? Makes a big difference on point gap. Did you set the point gap while the points were on the top of a lobe???
Yup, writing too fast as we're trying to get to Old Crow tonight. First off, we got her running again. The centre contact in the old dist was well worn, changed to our new back-up cap. There was coil spark all the time, just not getting to the plugs. Points have been set and cleaned at 0.020 - on top of a lobe. We are running 12 volt. Driving solo (no support vehicle, people or trailers) 5,000 miles from home… can make you a bit crazy. Thanks for the help. I may be back for more before this is over.
5000 miles from home, on a road trip across the good ole USofA, and no pics posted???? WTH ??? glad your up and runnin
