Hello all, looking at taking the steering shaft out of the housing and converting it in to DD at the end to install in a DD joint. Question is how can I splice the two pieces in the steering column together that would be strong and safe enough. What's your recommendations, tricks or tips to complete this.
    Thank you

My '46 Olds column. Added a floor plate and nylon bush to support the shaft. I also added a 3/4" ID bearing that sits inside the bush that also supports the shaft. I machined flats on shaft to take a 3/4" DD universal joint. Grub screw holds nylon bush in column and collar supports inner shaft. For all intents and purposes it is still an OEM column from inside the car.

That is how we converted the Ford col on our coupe to run a GM end. Only additional thing we did..... we put a pilot hole in the shaft that we then used to pin the dd connector in.

Nylon bush was turned up from stock and drilled to suit 3/4" ID as was the small collar for the shaft. It required a slight OS drill so it shaft didn't bind on nylon when turning. The bearing is a press fit into nylon so shaft spins freely.

The bearing itself is an upper support (Coffee pot) bearing from a local '70s Ford column, 3/4" diameter ID. A recess was turned in the nylon to recess it so it mirrors OEM upper column bearing. Column was cut 6" into engine bay with shaft being roughly 2" longer than that.
