TODAY IN HISTORY: On this day in 1967, at the age of 68 and on a 47-year-old bike, Burt Munro set a new World Record in the Flying One Mile Cl*** S-A 1000cc! His average speed of 183.586mph remains unbroken.
Amazing fact. It just goes to show you that they made bikes pretty well made back then. This would have been a moment I would have love to see, but I technically wasn't of this world at the time.
Pretty amazing Kiwi, actually an absolute ****** legend, lived a couple of hours from me, my father had the privalege of meeting him in the 60's. And funnly enough very little people over here knew of Bert and his exploits before the movie came out. Hayes Hammer Hardware in Invercargill (Berts home town) have a permanent display of some of Berts bikes and equipment for all who visit the shop to enjoy. Almost worth the trip down South alone..
