Well I sent Thom this e-mail:

    Hey Thom!

I saw those renderings in Rod and Custom Magazine of the 59 Olds Roadster. I beat you to it in steel though! Ha Ha Ha. Kevin Lee asked me to send him some pics a couple of months ago. Here it is now. I don't know if he was going to use those I sent in a garage scene article or not.

I just thought you may be interested to see it. I am a big fan of your work!

    Thanks,
    Aaron Grote

And I got this Reply: (I have edited out his top secret idears though)

    Hi Aaron
I Love it! But I swear to God I never saw nor heard of your car. I pride myself on doing original stuff, even if it isn't always accepted--I've drawn some turds along the way. I don't know when you got this done but I originally ran this idea with a couple of quick sketches by Brian Brennan at Street Rodder a few months before I showed it to Kevin.

All of this has gotten kicked off in my head because I'm sick to my stomach of these super expensive show cars that the owners are actually proud to tell how much they spent to have built.

So that is why I did the 4-door article a while back and the Model A article more recenty in Street Rodder, and the article a couple of months back in R&C where sedans are radically cut up. I'm trying to get people to think that expensive isn't necessarily good and to try to get some ideas out there for some inexpensive hot rods.

Again, the idea is to show some potentially cool ideas on a cool looking car without having so much in it. I'm rambling, so I'll cut out. Thanks for sending the pics!Thom

I edited his response a bit, because maybe he told me some info he wouldn't want to get out, but I think it was pretty damn cool for Thom Taylor to e-mail me. Ha Ha Ha

So there you go....a little mid day drama for the soap opera crowd. Ha Ha Ha

Mike Desmond, Conder, and that guy Chip, along with a few members here, make that comment as senseless as Dr J.

I have a pencil sized ummmm......yeah......ummmm what does that make me? A rockstar, artist, or builder? Ha Ha Ha

On my business cards it says "Agronomist" what does that mean?

    .....and Gracie.....don't tease.:D

  5. That is funny for anybody that does know.

I remember when Miles Cook and John Kiewiecz called Michael Desmond the God of the Pencils several years ago now. I have met Michael he is cool!
Getting a response like that from Thom Taylor is very cool also. You had to wonder if that was his reasoning behind all those drawings we have seen lately.

  6. i know i'm not a master builder like plowboy, but i'm a rockstar and i'm closer! :)

Thom Taylor "gives away" interesting ideas all the time. . . really inspiring stuff. . . I think he deserves the benefit of the doubt in this case. . .

you have a good at***ude plowboy. . . none of this matters as much as how you feel when you are in the garage building. Your car is your car and thousands of people all over the world (seriously) hold you in high regard for your creativity. . . you own that.

  10. i like to lick the beaters when someone is baking cookies. does that make me the master beater?

I remember seeing similar concepts in Custom Rodder many years ago.

One was a narrowed up Merc highboy, the other was a narrowed Edsel Roadster.
Don't remember who did the artwork.

Then it turns out someone already had an Edsel roadster under construction.

The basic idea is not new.The Art is in making it look correct.

  12. a ton of "cool" factor and a exceptional build.

I don't mind at all if someone wants to build something I've drawn. If it was handled in a malicious or underhanded sort of way, then yeah, karma's a *****. For the record, that A sedan turned pickup thing was not my idea, I had seen a few takes on that concept before my art was done and just threw my take on it. Kind of like taking a '32 Ford roadster and pulling the fenders off, THAT'S never been done, huh? I think I'll call it a high-boy!

Jeem, you can actually say I am copying you! After I showed my first pics of the lunar lander, Kustombuilder e-mailed me the ones you did for him. Of course yours was a 60 olds but who's keeping score? Ha Ha Ha

....that's funny, now the "Top Builders" are constantly doing everything in their power to cover up the engine - with covers and such - in an effort to "clean-up" the engine bay. Perhaps visual glory has metamophosized.

Or maybe running a SBC is more embarr***ing than they'd admit :) (sorry - had to take a pot-shot at that one).

  23. Just fwiw, some Hot Wheels cars are takes on the same concept. There is a pie-cut narrowed '57 Chevy with the wheels stuck out front like a suicide front end, and I see one now that is like a '72 Dodge Charger narrowed to about half as wide with the wheels stuck out on the sides like a highboy roadster.

I have my own crazy idea for something like this, don't know if it will get built... still need to see a pic of a '47-8 Merc frame, see if it would work better than an S10, to get the look and the wheelbase both right. I have a Model A frame and a couple of these front ends, though, maybe I can come up with a cheap oddball cowl and make up a roadster with one of the noses. But it's an idea I thought of based on that Edsel the guy actually built, and before I ever came on here. So who knows....

Plowboy's at***ude doesn't surprise me as anybody that knows him knows what he is like. Reminds me of an interview I saw with Waylon Jennings a few years ago. Somebody mentioned something about stealing sounds, it wasn't his exact words, but he said something like, "people steal ideas from each other all the time, it's no big deal."

I like Plowboys car but I like Thom Taylor too. He gave us permission to use one of his drawings as a car club logo and didn't ask for a dime. He just wanted credit. I say "2 thumbs up".

I am with Jeem on this issue.

Guys who are drawing sketches create all kinds of stuff and they immediately show everybody their ideas likes it's nothing. But when a guy works on a car and comes up with something unique he supposed get all pissed off when someone "copies" him. I don't get it.

If I had the talent to build a car that was a "never-seen-before" type thing I'd be as proud as **** if some conceptual artist went off and started sketches that were inspired by my ****....and the more famous the artist the more proud I'd get.

Taking all the credit for it - well it might sting a little. But the satisfaction of knowing that I did it all on my own and the fact that I'd probably show it off to all of my friends during the build, would take most of that sting away.

Nobody is going to get rich from making a cool looking car - or picture for that matter......

It's all about ego. I have very little of that - I am a self hating/depraving type.

The lander won't get a bubble top.

I do however have a "top secret" project lined up.

Of course I can't keep a secret once I've started on it so stay tuned.

.......and leave Thom Taylor alone! He is OK in my book. Ha Ha Ha

Its one thing to present a artistic rendering and I do like to see different ideas for inspiration. But after seeing the LL in person that was truly inspiring. It is great seeing it evolve here on the HAMB. Rumour has it the pencil reference from Plowboy is exagerated. :D
