Hey guys I'm swapping the carb on my 56 merc. Of course I need to ditch the load-a-matic distributor. I was just going to use a 57 distributor but I'm having a hard time finding one. I can't spend $400 on a MSD. Any ideas? I'm not real familiar with the whole distributor thing so I don't know what years will work. Any help? Ryan Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
1957-1964 Ford Y-block distributors will work. They are all the same except for internal changes (ball bearing breaker plate changed to hinged). Other small block Ford distributors are different.
I just ordered a rebuilt on one through O'Reilly's last night. Part number 30-2808, $66.99. Ready for me to pick up Thursday morning! Advance Auto Parts has it cheaper but couldn't get it before I leave on Friday.
Thanks!!!! My advance auto can't get it. Ill go by o'reillys tomorrow Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
O'reillys was a bust.... They can't get one factory direct. I'm running out of options a Mallory unit is $340. If I don't find one soon that'll be the way I go. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Check 'Galaxy': www.galaxyhighperformance.com . I see them at the swaps in Calif and they have stock units and stock units converted to electronic for the Y blocks. Their ph # is: 800 735 4593, 626 962 0407, 626 945 0095 They are in Baldwin Park, Ca.
Ohhh K might check here http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B000CIEV8M/ref=dp_olp_0?ie=UTF8&condition=all Direct Link In Stock = 1 http://www.barmacauto.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1_286_287&products_id=32705
I looked at the usual suspects, no joy. A matter of need, time etc. If it was me I'd find one non reman and send it to someone like Bubba or another distributor shop who still knows how to rebuild them.
Rockauto has the '57 and later distributor for $57 plus a $27 core charge. Not too bad!
From Rockauto A-1 CARDONE Part # 302808 is available only through the manufacturer's Return & Rebuild service. Please see the note in the cart.

That's really weird. When I looked up the part earlier, it was available with a core charge. Now, you have to use the rebuild service.
I have a 59 Edsel yblock sitting on a pallet..nothing wrong with the distributor. pretty sure the connecting rod hanging out the side of the block is why the p-o parked it... I can pull the distributor and send it to you... Let me know.. Dave
Just went through getting a 1957 dist for my 55 272, it is a ball bearing type but I didn't know what that meant. I looked all over doing the web crawl and couldn't find any information on how to get it apart as it was gummed up and needed cleaning and oiling to get the mechanical advance to work. In doing research I found a couple of baby bird posts (55 to 57 t-bird) on how all the remaned units are the wrong length shafts. It seems there are no more cores for y blocks so they are using 302 W distributors with the gear relocated and they kinda work. Problem is the shaft is 1/4 inch too short and does not engage the oil pump shaft enough and if the gear wasn't properly located the torque of driving the oil pump causes the gear to bottom the advance weight mount in the dist and eat up the housing. I will try to post some pictures of a 1957 ball bearing unit apart so you can see what it is. Problem with this unit is a Pertronix will not fit because of the straight vacuum advance arm and the vacuum advance is pricey if you need one. Otherwise a good distributor.
