Just bought a 64 A100 273/ auto727. I know that in the mid 70s-80s there were braces that went from the engine to the lower transmission for extra support. But I'm not sure about if they were use in the early 60s ? Also if anyone knows this...are the support braces the same between a small block 904 to a small block 727.. I'm missing the braces (if they were used in 1964)

A lot of these got left off after starter, trans or oil pan repair.
I'm sure all of us mopar guys here have some.

My 76 d200 didnt have them and it was a 360/727 combo...but I have seen them before, but never on anything as early as 1964. As it was stated earlier, most of them probably got left off after any sort of repair as they seem to be kinda "extra" but im sure they had a function if they were installed from the factory. I wouldnt think they would be too tough to fabricate, some good measuring and a little elbow grease and you are back in business.

  6. My 69' 273 had them on it. I replaced it with several larger motors and never needed them.

I do recommend you use the starter brace, however.

I forgot to say that the braces leave a "footprint" in the dirt and grease on my old Dodges.
In other words, you should be able to see where the brace went. There's a squared mark around two of the bellhousing holes.

Speaking of starters...I recommend you take the ginormous freewheeling starter off of that thing and use it as a boat anchor and get yourself a high torque mini starter...but mini starters are soooo expensive you say? On the contrary they can be had for cheap and you can buy them at any parts store. Buy a starter for a 93 dodge dakota with a 5.2. It is a high torque gear reduction starter about half the size and weight of the original, it will bolt right up to any small or big block chrysler. The only difference is the location of the studs for the wiring. I learned this trick years ago after a $350 high torque mini starter I bought from summit failed after a week. My buddy works the parts counter at a local parts shop, he saw the mini starter and went and snagged the dakota starter and when set next to each other, they were identical. I walked out that day with a new starter that cost me like 70 bucks with a warranty and it works like a champ.
