I am getting ready to put a set of 26 tooth lincoln gears in my 39 ford trans. After taking it all apart and inspecting the gears, i noticed these two gears that have pits in them. They look almost like a "casting " flaw. Doesnt look like a chipped tooth or damage from anything else, but i am no professional and am looking for a second opinion. Everything thing else in this trans is like new except this gear, which i think is first gear. Do you think it is ok to run? Do you think it will make a noise? Any help appreciated. Thanks.
Pitting from rust? Because this trans has been sitting for years, but this is how it looked when it came apart. It wasnt rusty and cleaned up with a wire wheel or anything, it looked just like this after cleaning with mineral spirts only. Thanks.
Could be rust, but I've seen gears do that after foreign objects p*** between them, such as pieces of metal from bearings or the gears themselves. If you can find a gear fairly easy, it would be best to replace it, but otherwise run it and just remember it might not be as strong as it should be.
its paling its when the harding gets worn off the gears or can start when some thing goes through the gears they are toast
If that is on the load side of the gear in low it wil fail sooner of later ,a lot depends on how much power is in front of it. And how hard you beat on it.b Looks more like metal fatigue to me rather than rust, rust would tend to cover the entire tooth.
just run it and when (or if) it fails replace it. be on the lookout for some though for when the time comes
Run it, The old wise dudes say it'll hold more oil. But seriously just take all the slack out of the drivetrain before hammering it and it'll last a looooong time. Keep your eyes peeled for some 28 tooth stuff and have it at the ready. All the best, Tim
Looks like gear tooth spalling to me. Here's some info that might be useful http://www.xtek.com/pdf/wp-gear-failures.pdf and some pictures https://www.google.com/search?q=gea...6L8nPsAT-ooCwDw&ved=0CDEQsAQ&biw=1024&bih=643
