Barn Find, Ford 427 dual quad top end

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Lazlobassett, Dec 9, 2010.

  1. OK, eatin' crow here.:(

Nice find. The carbs (BK-BJ) were the same as came on a 67 GT500 Shelby.

    Nice Find!

I am one of those FE nuts...

I would like first dibs on the fuel filters if and when you decide to part with anything.

Very desirable parts by the way..

Intake is a 427 Low Riser
Carbs were factory on the 427 Low RIser Galaxie etc and also the 67 Shelby GT500's but the shelby used a different intake a C7AX (medium riser)

The fuel canisters fit a bunch of 427's as factory issue.

All pretty valuable parts. Am in need for a couple fuel canisters for current projects.

I would also be interested in the other parts depending on pricing.

Looks like someone beat me to the Shelby carbs ID

The heads intake , carbs and air cleaner all look like the proper early 65 427 Low Riser Galaxie parts. Headers are Cleveland or Boss 302 and look to have been made up to fit that Comet. They probably won't fit directly into anything , even another Comet without modification. The way the front tubes go down under the motor mount looks like that Comet probably ran without a front crossmember and maybe even had a straight axle.

I was looking over the block that came with this lot, casting number is C5AE-A, which looks to be a 65 427. It doesn't have the holes for the side bolts on the other set of main caps.
Seems like I have enough to build a pretty cool 427, just not sure what I'm going to do with it. I won't break up the set, it all matches and has survived together. It deserves to stay together. Might be a good mill for a '29 A speedster project that has been rattling about in my head for a few years or do you think it should go to someone restoring a galaxie or whatever? Any thoughts?

Those pistons with the bumps were used on 406 and early 1963 427 low riser engines. They didn't use them that long.In your case, it would be the 427.The first 427 I ever had used those pistons and it was one of the early 427s made in 1963. Looks like he had a collection of stuff from over the years. Most FE guys collected stuff,I used to have a bunch also until I sold it all thinking it not worth much...boy did I sell too soon.

  10. I would sell the stuff, worth quite a bit to a Galaxie restorer.

Make wall hangers out of those headers. Thompson came up with that idea to make equal length headers for tight engine compartments easier to manufacture. Instead of taking the time to route the pipes all over the place to get the equal "tuned" length to come out right where you wanted the collector he just ran them the shortest way and ran them parallel when they collected having them uneven and then making the "tuned" length up in the collector. The collector was then made very long and slid over the pipes up to the end of the one closest to the front of the car and welded in place. He sent us a set for our Super Stock Camaro and wanted a report. They slowed the car down a good tenth (or more) and never recovered until a set of true length units were put back on. A little embarrasing to show up at a meet and have an "also ran" car that couldn't come within two car lengths of you drive by and wave.
They were perfect for putting under the rear tires to keep the car from rolling down the driveway while the engine was out. The length of the long collector was just about the width of the rear tire we used at that time and the flanges kept the collector from rolling. If he had marketed them as parking chocks he'd of made a fortune.:(

  12. I would sell it all to fund my ongoing project! Sure the 427 would be cool in your ride but having a ride that was paid for is even better. You could buy a flatty,Olds, nailhead etc and have money left over! Maybe it's just me but I'm practical that way....

Honestly, while this stuff is valuable, especially if there is a 427 block there, it isnt worth as much as guys might think, the downturn in the economy has depressed FE stuff pretty hard, and the low-riser stuff being relatively common as 427 FE parts go, has been hit the hardest. Dont get me wrong, its still worth some $$, but not like what it was 2 yrs ago. And no, I am not trying to cut a deal on it, I dont have the kind of money for that stuff.

All 427 blocks were cross-bolted. Check the bore dia.

    332, 352 4.00"
    360, 390, 410 4.05"
    406, 428 4.13" Late 406 were cross-bolted. early 406 and 428 were not.
    427 4.23"

Hard to confuse a 427 bore with anything else.

C5AE-A was also cast on 390 blocks, so I'd guess that's the most likely candidate.

What is the bore size of the block? The casting numbers on the FE blocks are not always reliable. There are some 427s without crossbolted mains, but they are very rare and were usually used in industrial applications. I really doubt that it is a 427, since it doesn't have cross bolted mains.

About the only stuff correct for a Fairlane (427 version) are the fuel filter canisters and the air cleaner and breather cap

Its probably worth more individual than as a lot. If you were to "build" it you would end up with far more money to complete it than you would get for it.

I have a complete 427 side oiler that is standard bore, a crank that is fresh .010-.010 with fresh medium riser heads, custom pistons, lemans rods etc and am having a tough time trying to get 4000.00 for it. Center oiler/Low riser stuff is lower in price by quite a bit. Good luck with it!

You gotta have deep pockets to build FE stuff. Clean it up and move it...use the money for a project. I'd chance selling it right now. Things are as good as they are going to be for awhile. The people that need that stuff have the $$$ now or later.

I agree. Not suggesting waiting for things to pick-up.

Not sure I agree with the "deep pockets" though. You can build a pretty strong FE (550 hp range) for less coin than you would expect, but you have to be a little more creative.

Fiveohnick2932, Sell it to one of those ******ual FE guys...... Pretty harsh, It's clear you have never had any fun with an FE..... Your loss. Maybe someday, if you become an ***istant, to the ***istant manager, at Taco Bell, you can get a 427 FE too!

    Ah -

You Ford guys have no idea what the hell to do with your parts. Why not just cut them up and put them to good use on a Pontiac~!
