checked it and got 3 1/8 turns, also when I said more passing power I meant just that with no kick down at wot on the freeway it will pass any car going the speed limit but I just want a little more top end speed and I think a kick down and a slightly lower ratio will work just fine. Thank you to all who contributed.

So your ratio is about 3.125?? What ratio is available for your axle in that area?? You can normally say which one it is when you know what was possible.

When you say slightly lower you thinking in the high 2's??

Fixing the kickdown so you get a lower gear for passing will make a massive difference to the performance feel.

A low 3 ratio should be a pretty good all round ratio with that size of motor and a relatively light truck. What size tires are you running??

Really and truly in this day and age you should be looking at a box that features an overdriven top gear. Then you get all the performance you want and relaxed cruising and better economy on the highway. You don't normally use the words "economy" and "455" in the same sentence though.

  3. I am with Brickster, keep it driveable and 3:23 wont be too sluggy at all

  4. Id Try a temp wire and toggle for the kickdown before I spent any money on gears.

So you have the common V8 gear of 1980, 3.08.

Dropping to a 2.73 might be worth 1/2 MPG or less.

Here is what it does yo your 65 MPH kickdown scenario.

I'd keep the 3.08 and work on the tune.

I'd run a 3.08:1, and fix the other issues.
