Hey everyone. I was wondering where the dang coolant temp sensor is supposed to go on an earlier 283 SBC? There is a flat pad between cylinders 1/3 where the sensor normally threads into the block, however my block isn't drilled/tapped for it. Will the sensor that normally goes into the block thread into the aux water port on my aftermarket intake manifold? I dont have an old sensor to play around with and I just want to buy the correct sensor off the bat. And the power-pack heads I have dont seem to have any holes I can put a sensor into.

    Thanks

    Either will work.
I have one in both locations on my 283. The back one goes to the gauge inside on the dash, and the other has a gauge right on it...
They will pretty much read the same, although the back of the block is a better indicator of real engine temp...(according to my Brother in Law anyway)
You can see it on the right of the picture...
(I also have an oil pressure gauge on the engine...seen on the left, as well as a vacuum gauge located behind the carb)

Factory location....intake manifold. Next to the water outlet.

sorry fellas, brain fart. the location Im thinking of is in the head, between Cyl 1 and 3. not in the block. Just trying to picture it and I thought it was next to the freeze plug. But ya there is a flat, rounded off pad there. On my 350 the same pad exists but is drilled to fit the sensor, whereas my 283 is not.

I'll go get a new sender tomorrow and stick it in the intake!

I'll just throw this out there: make sure the sensing portion of the sender is not obscured by the adapter bushing. Make sure it is in the coolant flow.
