Art & Inspiration Plans for 30's dirt car?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Mike Britton, Aug 31, 2013.

  1. One of those "I shoulda got these when I saw them" things.
Does anyone remember seeing a reprint of plans, I think, from Popular Mechanics back in the 30's-40's for a dirt track one seater using model A parts?
I can't remember if I saw it here, or on evil-bay or where.
Now that I want them, I can't find them.
    Thanks all, Mike

I have seen the plans on E-Bay, but couldn't find them when I just liked.

I have a 30's Flat Tail Sprint car you can see in my pictures. If you want, I could provide more information on the car.

Take a look on e-bay and you will find the book with plans available on CD. Based on seeing this thread, I just bought one myself. Just $13

    I bought the plans, too.
    They're not blueprints, though.
    Lots of missing info.
    Model T frame...

  7. "Radiator shell and body are easily hammered from aluminum..." ;)

  8. What he said. The Ray Kuhns book is a reprint and compilation of the magazine articles. The K-8 car is pretty simple, and I drove a steel version and started gathering pieces to make one.

Rear half of 48-54 Chevy pickup rear fenders make the last 18" of the tail. I found an old school bus trans cover that made the compound for the cowl. Massey Ferguson grill turned upside down made the Miller style grille.

Sold it all off when I found an aluminum body.

  9. ABSOLUTELY!!! Indepth pics, please.

  10. Wow! looks like I may have started something!
If this is OK with the mods, do we want to keep this thread up?
It looks like a fun project that could be done with swap meet parts that a lot of folks walk by and don't think of. Thanks all, Mike

I have seen those plans. They did not impress me as being something useful to aid me in my replica build. So I took a different tack and built my own bucks to do the body sections and made a rectangular tube frame. This is the first and last champ car I will be doing so I am willing to sell the body bucks. Needless to say they are quite large and deceptively heavy so I do not want to try to ship them from their current 48162 location - pick up only.

Here's one that was built from the Kuns plans.

  13. Hey Mike,,,Has Smiley been putting ideas in your head???

  14. Bobby!!
Always had this thing for antique race cars. My dad built midgets when we lived in Indiana.
Besides, since I'm always at the swap meets, a lot of these parts are there for the taking.
But yeah, Smiley has had an influence on me......

  15. Go for it Mike,,,just hope it fits in Ryans "new" HAMB requirements

  16. It's his site.
In order to get the entertainment I get from the HAMB, I'll abide by his decisions.
I wouldn't want to run this "entity".

If you're not sure if it will fit, you can always post it on the sister site (Dogfight).

  18. IIRC, I signed on to dogfight, but I've yet to go there.
