Glad you got it covered! I knew something about the 400's with fluid level.....
Drop it until problem is solved.... I believe when it shows "add" on a factory stick, that's where you want it.
    P.I.A. but simple fix! Cool!:)

  2. Or the vacuum modulator leaking past the diaphragm. It happens to transmissions that have those. ****s ****** fluid up into the intake and looks like a really bad deal when really it isn't that big a deal at all.

Pull the vac hose off the modulator and see if it has fluid in it. 10 minute diagnosis that will save you hours of hunting.

  3. I'm currently shopping around for a Quality metal dipstick...that can be mounted to the firewall. Seems the teflon on has some scorched marks..as it sits too close to the headers...and it's just cheap...quality first and foremost

Real quick like- The factory tube will bolt to the trans bellhousing.....Come up a couple inches away from the distributor.....Shouldn't interfere with the exhaust at all(being close). Anything used other than the factory tube(in your application) you'll have to figure out,but the fluid level is what i'de attack first. Even if you run your current tube/stick- drop it some and drive it for comparison ........

When breaking in a new cam your headers get insanely hot which probably didn't help matters

I was wondering that.... Glad you found it... Use a stock dipstick....

  7. I've had them puke fluid and they smoke like that, I was about to say the same thing.

I even had one where the trans cooler line started to rot and was peeing out just enough to get on the exhaust that it smoked doing 70 on the highway, but it took a couple days of driving before the line actually popped enough to leak and make a puddle. Which it did while driving it home one night.

When I would rev my 383 stroker motor it would blow out the dipstick and oil would get on the headers and smoke like hell. probably not your problem, just saying.

  9. Yeah...just got out from underneath...it's coated from the transmission back...I indeed have dual exhausts...and gunk all over the pipes...So I drained 3\4 of a quart transmission fluid...and will order a new metal dipstick tuesday...going to Cloudcroft and up to Ruidoso tomorrow to see if the smoke clears...and break in the new cam.

thanks for all your attention and help

Years ago I replaced the intake manifold gaskets on a 283. IT WOULD SMOKE AT 45 MPH AND ABOVE. I found the gasket at the back of the manifold slipped out of place and the oil , at rpm, would come out and run down on the exhaust manifold and cause my smoke.
