Damn - what happeened to that Opel - looks like it's folding itself in half. Nice set of pics. Charlie
man that one of eddie hills car blowing up is impressive, total removal of the right head.. hahahahhaha the first pic is awesome.
I want to blow an engine up. Not just the insides but really just blow it apart. That would put a big smile on my face.
Hell Yeah,LOL. I never saw a car fold up as bad as that Opel but a guy I knew back in Okc had a BBC powered vega with a back half and he whacked it one day and bent it bad enough to pop the windshield out and bind up the doors. T.OUT
That last shot is the shizz-nit. A car jumping off the ****ing ground on a launch - ARE YOU KIDDING ME? If that doesn't just make you gaze at the screen for a few seconds I dunno....
That's Frank Mazi's "God of Hellfire" g***er trying to take out the christmas tree. Only thing wrong is there's a 3" or 4' square cement base holding the tree. I think Franks daughter Dawn has a website called the Combustion Chamber that has more pictures on it.
BTW - I grew up watching Frank Mazi race his Opel at Thompson Drag Strip - Man that thing was AWESOME - left the line HARD!!!! And even though I went to school with his daughters - I unfortunately didn't know any of them (then) and even STILL the Mazi Pit was the friendliest at the track BAR NONE!!!!!! Great memories!!!! And you're right about Dawn's website!! BTW - Dawn drove a rear engine dragster for a while a few years back!!!!!
Looking at that picture of Eddie Hill makes me want to reconsider ever building a front engine dragster
That pic of Eddie Hill's fueler exploding is partly what prompted NHRA to restrict the percentage of nitro that could be used in the tank. Eddie hadn't been running too good and, being a racer, wanted to do whatever it took to run better. He kept adding more nitro to the tank until he reached 100% and the hemi exploded -lengthwise!!! That's right, the hemi split itself right in half down the middle. The explosion was so violent that Eddie was put in the hospital with a pretty nasty back injury. After the second explosion, Eddie decided that, well, life has more to offer than defying the devil every time he got in the beast. While he did want to race after that, I think he wanted to be an owner only and let some young buck take over the pilot's duties. He never could find sufficient sponsor funding to do that. What a loss for NHRA as Eddie and Ercie were and are a cl*** act. My favorite top fuel pilot of all time-in case you couldn't figure that out!
Damn i miss the old days of altereds.............those little ****s NEVER went straight............most excellent collection of 'power'..... BigKen
Last time I saw Nanook run was at CHRR a few years ago and it crossed the finish line with all 4 tires in the air. Seen the Rat Trap do that too. The shot of the TJ Taxi is a cl***ic. Nothing in drag racing says balls like an altered. As for Eddy and Ercie, I'll second that about them being the nicest people in drag racing. He drove Drag Boats for years too.
Those pics are awesome. I remember a guy I knew when I was in the Marine Corps. He had a late 80's camero with a stout 454 and turbo 350 in it. He came off of the line after frying the hides a bit, when the tires hooked it ripped the left motor and trans mount off and laid the motor on its right side. Ripping off the left front fender and going through the hood. the trans ripped throught the floor board and broke the dash in two. He was prety banged up from when the trans came through the floor. Jacin, Fancy meeting you here! You are too sweet! I have the full story of that incident with the 'tree at Bowling Green on my site. Dawn
Cool! Does anyone have a pic. of The Hemi under gl***,with all four off the ground? This car was made to break 'em loose, but when it hit a sticky spot on the track,it LEAPED about 4 ft. off the ground.Sparky
