Another great photo. It looks as if the roll bar is a hoop attached to the rear cab panels. Is tha the case, or did you have a removable cage tied to the frame ? Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
The hoop went down to the frame. The rear brace, missing in the picture, clamped around the hoop and bolted to the rear cross member.
What a great read. Your article just puts the reader right in the action. I hope you get to see your old hot rod soon!
I have always considered Dean as a driving force on the Hamb,,he has been involved for many years and has lived the history. His knowledge and willingness to help has endeared him to many here, thanks for all you do Dean. HRP
What a great thread and a wonderful testament to your Dad for being involved in your hot rodding youth. Thanks for sharing.
This is the shot that they used in the article. I like the unpublished one because it shows the LIONS sign.
Fact. ^^^^^^^^^^ .......having your pops ride along with a stop watch to check the 'Ol girls performance. PRICELESS! I'm waiting for his book to come out......
Dad is watching the tach. I had it marked for 60 and 100 mph. The car never had a speedo. I drove it on the street by the tach. That photo is bitter sweet for me. I miss my hot rod and my pop.
I received this photo last night. That's Steve Hill working on the restoration. He's working round the clock now to have the restoration complete for the Pendine Sands event in a few weeks. Brings a tear to my eye remembering back to Christmas 1960 when Dad and I were finishing up the original build.
That car is one of the all time greats and is also one of the all time great HRM covers, as iconic as the Orange Crate, the Highland Plating Special, or the Mooneyes dragster. I bought that magazine new, back when figuring out which magazine would get that precious 50 cents was very, very hard, and remember everything about it vividly. Just a simple rod put together perfectly from perfectly chosen bits, a very fast piece of jewelry.
Dean, is that some of the original Candy Persimmon on the sheet metal???? If so he should save some fenders and replace them with new repops. Saving the Persimmon would let others see what a great color it was......
Mark, there was no paint left on the car worth saving. It took Steve a month to get 30 coats of lacquer stripped off it. In March Steve brought me this paint chip from the tail gate. I checked it with a mike, .040 thick! That is all new paint in the picture.
One of my favorite things about the HAMB is having the opportunity to actually be on the same forum with guys whose cars I grew up idolizing. Dean's rpu was right at the top of that list, it had all the ingredients of an iconic hot rod, and I remember being a 12 year old kid and saying "some day." I can only imagine how that picture of you and your Dad must make you feel, Dean. Such a great shot and it speaks volumes about the kind of Dad you had, and your relationship with each other. He must have loved you a lot, you got to wear the helmet ! Don
I didn't fit him Don! Mark, if you want to see the paint ship, come by anytime. If you mean the roadster, you'll have to wait 'till the summer of '14.
I have a feeling you'll own it again, and I don't know any of you. But I bet your name will be on the ***le once more. What a cool story.
Just got this pic from Steve today. He is heart broken. His chrome shop was late on some key parts for the rear end, and he missed his goal of driving the roadster to the Pendine Sands event. He finally got the parts two weeks late, but is taking some time off from the project. he's get back to it in January.
