I picked up 1940 Chevy Special Deluxe Sedan the other day for a dirt cheap $940. I bought it on a bill of sale because the last ***le was in 1972. The serial number recorded on the ***le fits the standard numeric engine serial sequence of seven digits and is in between the 2697268 to 3665902 range for 1940 Chevy motors. The problem is the serial number on my motor is "S-28-758 KAN" which does not fit any data list I can find. Could this be a replacement motor? The body tag contains the following data "40-1011" which indicates a 1940 model and body serial of 1011. The body tag also indicates "S 1871" but that is the only other data I can find. Any help that could be provided in deciphering what I have here will help me determine what type of restoration I will proceed with. The car is 95% complete with very minimal rust in one fender and across the rear skirt. Thanks for taking time to read this!
Maybe you should reconsider your screen name and tagline if you want responses to questions. Nice project btw.
Thanks! I like your avatar! Never understood why some people are adverse to the term "Rat Rod". I know a guy that puts Chevy engines in old Fords and adds custom paint tag lines like "Ford Tuff with Chevy Stuff!" The basis of all hot rodding technically started with "MOD"ifying their daily drivers with custom parts and pieces. Some cars need to be fully restored to original condition and some need a little extra help. I quietly step off my soapbox and back into the shadows! Take care and thanks and reading!
There should be a tag on the floor under the seat on the p***enger side. That will be the body serial number.
Thanks Babyearl, already looked and it's gone. According to most resources I have found this is the 11th two door Special Deluxe Sedan produced in 1940. The serial numbers started at 1001 and this 1011. The KA on the body tag on the cowl confirms Special Deluxe along with the additional stainless trim and gauge cluster. The motor serial is what is befuddling me most. Getting a new ***le when the engine serial does not match the 1972 ***le will cause me to have to jump thru some hoops with the state. Thanks for trying, appreciate the help!
