Hope this type of thing is not going to be considered too far off topic because I look to this forum as a great resource for all things build related... But anyway - A barrel full of molasses. What effect will antifreeze have on it or will it even freeze as it is? I've got 40 gallons of it behind the garage that's going to need some attention in a month or so on this note... And I don't think dollying it across the rec room floor is a good idea.
I don't think I would mix anything in with molasses other than water. Maybe try using an engine block heater, or one of those heaters used in Koi ponds so the fish don't get stuck under the ice. They also use heaters in livestock watering barrels, so a farm supply store might have what you need. Butch/56sedandelivery.
Molasses won't freeze to begin with. If you've mixed it heavy with water then maybe think about a small stock tank heater
Not only will a fish-tank heater keep it from freezing but it also speeds up the process of the rust removal. Of course, if you're not using the molasses anyway, does it matter if it freezes?
If Dexter is anything like me just as it ices up nice and solid , thats when I would want to use it the most . Better run a heater bud !!
I plan on using this ugly bucket all winter long if I can but it would be my luck that something critical would be staring at me from inside a solid block of shellac until next April Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
you could look into a drum warmer its a heating pad with springs on it that straps to the outside of the drum , we use it to heat thick chemicals , and they are safe for plastic barrels too .
Fill a paper cup or ketchup 'cup' with it, and throw it in the freezer. Or when in the Maritimes, you're right, just wait a bit!
I've had a 9 parts water 1 part molasses mixture in a 500 gallon plastic tank for over 2 years including 2 winters with no problems. I didn't go out and check it for freezing during the winter, but my tank didn't overflow or split. I'm going to empty it this fall, not because of it freezing, but because it is old and stincks so bad.
I had some hood sides in a 55 gallon drum of molasses for over a year with no problems, but no way would a 55 gallon drum ever freeze in Alabama so I never even thought about checking for that.
you can sit on it thru out the whole winter,it it gets cold trow a blanket over it. and dont forget to change the diaper.
can you do a whole,( complete )engine for $17.95 using metal rescue? I did using molasses. a 5glln pale In a 55 glln plastic drum.it even lossens paint.no shit! I advise everybody to save there presidents, and try molasses.
On the barrel of molasses freezing, when apple cider freezes, the very center contains alcohol. Try drilling out the center of the molasses and see what is there, you may be on to something great!
I've had some ugly nights but waking up to those empty shot glasses would spell one nasty situation. Might bring up the iron levels in the blood though... Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
I vote for putting a cup in the freezer. The process is slow enough at 70* below freezing I doubt it would remove much rust.
HONOLULU – Thousands of fish are expected to die in Honolulu waters after a leaky pipe caused 1,400 tons of molasses to ooze into the harbor and kill marine life, state officials said. The good news, all of the ships in the harbor no longer have rusty bottoms..
Go to a hydroponics shop and buy a heater monitor used with a seedling heat mat.you set it at the setting (temp) you'd like and a sensor signals the unit when to shut of and turn on wich ever heat device you'd be using. Its made by hydrofarm and cost between $15/$20.
Here's my molasses deal... I have several different chains and hooks to allow me to hang several parts in the barrel at one time. I cleaned a LOT of stuff last summer so I decided to empty the old solution and refill it this summer. I simply dumped it out at the end of my driveway and flushed it into the street with a lot of water. What didn't go in the street went into my no-brother-good-in-law's parking lot. I mix mine about 3-1...
