I wonder if they have the same part number in any cam catalog, I've used SBC in BBC, flat tappet anyway.

I would love to hear an answer to this question as I am in the process of rebuilding a 324 Olds and it will need new lifters.

  4. Nope. If you are running solids and they are the same dia and length it should work. I would look at the pushrod pocket, the ones for my olds are deeper then most Chevy lifters that I have seen and that may cause you a problem with pushrod length.

If you are running hydraulics you may run into problems because of oiling.

Maybe you should get ahold of tony (goatroper02) to get a difinative answer. I know that there is a GM lifter that swaps in though.

    You'll need custom length pushrods.

    that's it..

The chevy lifter compared to Olds lifter, has the pushrod socket at a different height.

Also, I think on some hamb thread, there was mention of the oil groove location mismatch depending on the type of "aftermarket grind" Olds cam lobe. Ross Racing would know on that.

Hit it on the head with both answers. I have run solid tappets from a chev with no problems but I needed new push rods. I went to adjustable anyway so it did not matter.

The pushrods can be changed, but the oil groove really needs to be checked.

  10. So what is diff. Cups are same height. Oil hole same height. I had a new set of early lifters with 1/4 cup. Swapped in some later 5/16 cups.so I don't need to swap lifters, it runs fine. But for ****s and giggles, or if I want to sound like I KNOW something less someone asks.. ...what's the scoop.

  11. Concerning oil hole location. I had a stock cam foreground, hop up style. Does that mean my hyd olds lifters have the oil hole misaligned in the block.

The cup that positions the pushrod is recessed deeper in an Olds lifter. If you swap in Chevy lifters, now the pushrod is too long for stock Olds non-adj rocker setup.

Valves will stay open, and also hit pistons I believe.

I found a 56 abandoned project car in the boneyard, and it had "new" VL-49 lifter boxes laying in the car. The rocker shaft bolts were loosened way up on one bank, and the rocker shaft was removed on the other side. Heads had some bent valves. I am sure the guy loosened the rockers to get it to start, but I think the damage was done.

I tried to cross the VL 49, and it was coming up as later Pontiac and other GM's, not sure if it is a true SBC number though.

  13. ive got an olds and a chevy lifter right on my kitchen table ( no less ).... along with my calipers, i dont see a difference in the cup depth.

VL49 lifters are Olds and Pontiac not SBC.

I can't remember where I read it and you'd wanna research this info BUT "supposedly" Crane part # 99833-16 which is small block F-rd valve springs also fits Olds?? but I don't know for sure....
