Does anyone know if a 9" Granada rear end housing is the same width as an 8" and are the backing plates/drums & Axles (28 spline) the same. I have an 8" set up in my 40 ford coupe but want to switch out to a 9" housing and use all the other componets from the 8" (brakes/Backing plates drums etc.) I have 2-3 9" sections with a much better selection of gears.

Same width as WHAT 8" - Ford made many variations of the 8" so there are many different widths

Am guessing he means both 8 and 9 inch rearends used in Granadas.

finding a granada is hard to find these days...

6. If I remember right, the only Granada/Monarchs that got the 9" were ones with the very rare optional 4 wheels discs, and they got the same 9" rear as the Versailles. Why not just have a housing you have narrowed to match and swap the parts?

Well, IF that is what he means, yes they both should be 58" (possibly 58 1/2") flange to flange on both and axles etc should interchange as they both would be 28 spline

They built Granada's with both 8" and 9" rears. The Disc brake rears are all 9". The drum brake can be either, but I think there were only 1980 models with a 9" and drums. All 351 cars got the 9", 302 could have either and the 250" six were 8"

By the way the Lincoln Versailles 9" is the same width

Yes, the Granada drum brake 8" or 9" rear end is exactly the same dimensions, so all of your brakes, axles, backing plates and drums will fit between the two. The Granada/ Versailles/ Monarch disc brake 9" rear end is an entirely different animal.

The axle tubes were different diameter between most 8" and 9" rears. You most likely will need the 9" U-bolts and lower plates. Also, 9" used several different yokes so you may need to deal with differences there (u-joint and driveshaft length.)

'77-'81 Granada and Versailles were both 58" rear axles.

If you're talking about the Versailles disc-brake rearend (the only 9in Granada rear to my knowledge, they sold a VERY few in Granadas/Monarchs) it's the same width as a '65-66 Mustang 8in over the axle flanges, the sites that report it as being wider are measuring over the rotor hats which are thicker than a drum. So yeah, it's 1/4in wider each side due to the rotor-hat thickness, but for most purposes it's identical.

Now for the downside: the Versailles disc-brake setup is heavy, parts are now rare, it's not very effective, and there are much, much better ways to do rear discs on a Ford 8in or 9in these days.

For that matter, you might consider an Explorer 8.8 and narrow the long side to center the pumpkin.

I am still of the opnion that disc brkes on the resr are just overkill. A disc/drum combo will stop most cars very effectivley. Just my 2 cents worth

I think he wants to use the housing and keep the drum brakes. This is a no-go... the flange on the Versailles rear is totally different and the drums do not work.
Get any small bearing 9", have it cut to the 8" dimensions and use the 8" parts. The axles are the same

I've got a Versailles axle in my truck and as said above it is 28 spline 58 inch wide axle, but it has big bearings and 8 inch backing plates won't work. I switched mine from disc to drum using drum brake parts from Pete & Jakes, worked like a charm. I also have a spare axle with all the Versailles disc brake parts if anyone is interested. These parts are heavy and shipping would be expensive.

I had a Granada drum brake 9” … it was the only one iv ever seen.
Iv had several disc brake ones also … they are probably all 28 spline.

Id not be surprised if the two (8 & 9”) share the same exact axles and brakes … making them the same FTF measurement

Thanks for the info on the 8" VS 9" Granada rear end info. I think I have a line on a 9" Granada housing so I think I can make the swap with the axles/backing plates etc. and switch to the easier to find/stronger 9" center sections. Thanks Drive Em right on. GeoFord41
