Bought a 49 flathead that came out of a truck. Trying to figure out what bell housing I need to put it in my AV8 project. I looked at the PDF on the MSN forum but all it has is pictures of all the different ones and exploded views. No text telling what is what. I have two transmission choices. A late 40s truck 3 speed or an S10 T5. Anyone know what I need to be looking for? Are all the starters the same?

I used the truck bellhousing and a Cornhusker T-5 adapter kit to put a T-5 behind my Flattie. The "truck" bellhousing is the key component to have. Go to Cornhuskers website and you will see everything you need.

You need the exact one it was bolted to …. Then go from there
Early ford trans or adaptor to T5 / GM trans

  8. Will be two pieces. The bell housing and the clutch cover plate with the starter mount.

Yup. The truck bellhousing is the key for the T5. I used Cornhusker and it works like a charm.

The exact one that came with it is long gone. This motor has been on an engine stand since 1980 and he got tired of tripping over those parts a long time ago and sold them.

FlatheadV8.org has a good pdf file showing the various 48-53 Ford flathead bellhousings:
    http://www.flatheadv8.org/bellhousing.pdf

Bottom line, for the transmission applications you listed in your OP you want the 48-53 Ford truck bellhousing and starter plate and also the 49-51 Mercury bellhousing and starter plate will also work. Pictures of both taken from the pdf file are below:

If you place your cursor over the question mark on each picture, a text explaining the picture will appear. :)
