As others have said, I don't do it for the attention either. I love the crudeness of the old beasts. It's kinda like that 40-year-old tube amp hooked up to your dad's old Gibson. Even with the humming and popping, nothing sounds sweeter. In my opinion, technology has taken the fun out of driving. Sure newer cars are safer and damn near drive themeselves with all the power steering, 4-wheel-dual-piston-caliper disc brakes, traction control, and ****. Grant it, you can't take a hairpin curve in your 50 year old shoebox like the ricers, but theres no feeling like pushing it to its limits (even if it is only 30 mph). Let the gold-chainers have their LOOK-AT-ME at***ude and I'll keep my DON'T-GIVE-A-**** at***ude till the day I die.
let me correct my self a bit here. my sole purpose for this is not for attention. I just said its nice that what you work hard on is noticed and respected or not respected depending on whos looking at it. But that does not matter (the respect). Its just a added factor that i think is allright by me. I dont want to come off as some looser that needs my car to feel needed in life. I just ment i dont mind but added in a bunch of words to prove a simple point i guess. We all know we do it for the love of things mechanical and theres no way around it but there other things to it then just turning a wrench and blasting down a country road by your self. while all those parts of what we do it great there are allso other things that are and arent to some people. To each his own right? Im going to leave it at that before i put my foot back in my mouth again TSOL i havent heard them in forever! Them and subhumans were it at one time
Man, fer me it's much more about what *I* wanna look at. I could really give a **** what most people think of me or my cars. I don't mind the attention that they bring, but I'd enjoy them just as much if nobody ever said a thing. If I'm with other car people who've never seen what I'm drivin' I might say "hey check it out", but it's far from an approval thing...much more a "you might like this too" thing. That's why I'm here. I like a lot of what you guys got too. Hell look at what I drive...you gotta know I ain't tryin' to impress anyone else but me. and yeah...TSOL...listened to them a lot back in the first half of the 90's. Good ****. Better than Keel (but I listened to them too). Olson --------- now go to the cl***ifieds and buy wunna my cars so I can get that dream boat I just found
The singer for Keel went country. Changed his name to Ronnie Lee Keel even. Swear to God. Sorry to go o/t but I haven't heard them mentioned in a loooong time.
I agree here tommy. Come on get off that damn cloud! It's about the car! Of course prices are outragous, but i do it for factor that I want something that could have been buit in the 40's early 50's. the HISTORY and the respect for thoughs that were there creating this. Ken
At a car show in Atlanta,Georgia many years ago I saw a plaque on the dash of a very nice 40 Ford coupe that said,,," The two most overrated things in this world is teenage nookie and 32 Fords"........ Having sampled the first of this phrase in my youth,,and earned enough fun tickets to have reached my goal of owning a couple of 32's I have come to the conclusion that they very well may be overrated,,,,,but,,I will stick with the 32's,,,,ya can enjoy them for a lifetime! HRP
In high school a friend of mine and I bought a 51 Plymouth Cranbrook 2dr. We paid $200.00 bucks for it and we smiled all the way home. We tore it apart and had a hell of time doing so. He had a running SBC he got for free so we stuck it in and we drove it like that. Wide whites primer/rust and felt cooler than anything. I am sure we were thinking, Look at me, but I am sure people were wondering what the hell we were driving and why we were smiling so dang big. We got a lot of **** for running a SBC, but we thought hot rodding was doing the best with what you have and can afford. So if your pocket book can buy the 32 Ford then by all means buy it and if not buy what your can and have a ton of fun. Just my 2 cents
I have absolutely no doubt that SOME people are greatly driven by the "look at me" aspect of the sport. And if that's their gig - more power to them, but I sure as hell don't count myself as being in that crowd. Let's face it - some of us are consumed by this sport - but suerly for different reasons. Go drive a car that NO ONE respects and you'll understand the at***ude of those of us who DON'T do it for the "LOOK AT ME" reasons. Go build a Hot Rod and drive it to some deserted strip of raod and let her RIP!!! Even THAT will provide different thrills to different people. Maybe if you built the car that would be the ultimate test of your building skills - will it hold together??? Maybe if you bought it you just want to test YOUR driving skills or the vechile's limits - maybe BOTH maybe neither. Who's really to say???? I think the love of all things mechanical has a BUNCH to do with it. I think the romance of nostalgia has a bunch to do with it too. Not only that but is the reason why we started tinkering the same reason why we still do it today??? Kinda boils down to the dilema of why we do it period??? No simple answer....why do some people let others who never before touched their car write all over it (autograph it) ???? Some even line up while others couldn't be paid to let someone sign all their hard work!!! Kinda complicated ain't it.......
Its about the build first, with driving what I created a fast second. My heart still leaps sometimes when I step out in the shop and view my roadster. I'm not real crazy about talking to someone about my cars, probably why I enjoyed the Pileup so much. The majority of the people there are builders and you avoid lame people. Although now I'm thinking I need to get a foam ***** if its the (in) thing.
I build to please myself first but for some odd reason its managed to get me laid quite a bit too.....so hey, look at me!
i cant believe you didnt get yours at the last meeting of the FRP (foam rubber *****') FWIW, Joel has a good point. there is a big difference between having your car oggled at a show like the drags or the pileup, or BP, and parking it at the local gas station. the guys who build em are seeing what parts you used and how, there is a deeper appreciation of what you did versus the overall car. a builder will ask why you mounted your springs like this or that, and the average schlub will ask you why it isnt all shiny. unwanted "look at me" is the price you pay for having a daily you built from the ground up.
I'm not sure that the "look at ME" syndrome explains the price of '32 Fords ....but it probably explains things like body piercing, cross dressing.... and building a Willys Jeep hot rod truck. Now get that ***** off your head Fiddy....and get to work!!!!! HAHAHAHA!
I mostly build a "**** you" factor into any ride I can. No, I did it. Yeah I made those parts so **** you you can't charge em on yer card for your toy. Yes I painted this. No I never heard of him, I'm too busy doing MY work. (that's the response when the limp-wristed ****s wanna tell me about some awesome painter in his 1 car garage) Why shouldn't it be cut up? It's mine ain't it? Save it for who? I built this for me. Next time I'll call you for your input...got a card or something? I could tell you but I think it's over your head. It's worth as much as I can get if I need the money...and I don't need any right now so... Do you have one like this? No? Well then shut up and leave me alone. No I don't wanna race you. You can't afford it. Never mind...you win, nice race, good bye... Ok so I happen to be an equal opportunity ***hole. Car shows were my life for over 20yrs and I like many of you here have prolly heard it all. It sometimes makes me sick to my gut hearing these lawnchair ****heads talk their ****. Now I don't fault anyone for what they like. But just cuz you have a car too don't judge my ****. I already know what it is...I BUILT THE ****ER! The problem lies with the fact that I been known to do work for people as well as my own. I guess I need to get in the habit of "cherry pickin" jobs from real rodders. So I guess "look at me" applies in more ways than one. But no doubt accurate. I still love the idea of being rebelliously different or rebelliously "perfect". Lately "perfect" is easier and tends to keep others away. Just how I like it.
I dig not blending in like I do in my daily. I also kinda like it when people think I did my car "wrong." Is that weird?
I agree !!! I hate getting my pict taken, but I love it when I let some one sit in my car and get their pict taken !!!
The last 3W I had 11 years ago I made a sign for it that read: "Yes you can sit in this car. No...you do not have to be ****!" I would stand away and watch peoples' reaction. Had a blast with it. People would read it then look around like they were on Candid Camera, then they would sit in it and have their friend take pics. I loved it.
I like it when they get down on their knees and look in mine and Danyelle runs up and opens the door for them !!!
A 30 year old Gremlin with a Ford 460 will give you the thrill/history/feeling. You all want attention, quit denying it, ***s.
Larry, I tried to argue your point a few years back here on the board. Lots of folks will disagree with you, so I will ask them. If a hotrod has nothing to do with your ego, why dont you just drive a Taurus or an Accord? They do the same thing, point A to B. Some folks need to look deep into their souls, they are lieing to themselves.
TMAN, your missing the point, what does finding a car beautiful and enjoying driving it have to do with ego? Thats the same as saying art collectors only buy art to impress other people. You are wrong. Although I do believe most car guys are in it for ego, I also think that a rare few are in it becuase of the actual cars... not the reactions of other people. Best Regards, Hyfire
Oh Hell No!!! If I remember corretly the foundation of this Hobby ( i hate that word sometime) are those that did this in the 30's, 40's 50's and so on. Capturing a piece of thier history. Now a custom may have 1% of this subject. Hot ROds No, it's having fun right? (I don't have one or have, but will build one soon....) The first person that needs to grab the attention of your car is YOU! Ken
here is my outlook Im in it for the kill just like the rest of you.. Think about it you buy it to say you have one you build it cause you you can and or enjoy it. You drive the **** out of it, take it to shows, Till one day you get boured or broke , then you sell it and the cycle starts over only this time you change the things you learned you didnt like or found a different way of doing and so on and so on.. If this werent so we would never have to say I should have kept that one, That is what keeps us all doing what we all love so much. At least its the way I look at it... JOHN
