i was just wondering if there are any other good companies out there that have products like ply-do, because i've already ordered a catalog from them about two months ago and still haven't recieved it, but i understand since i called them and they said that they have been trying to get new catalogs made. But i really need to get my car out of the garage and get it running soon. most of the parts that im really looking for are the motor and ****** mounts, steering kits so i can use a newer model steering, and drop down spindles..etc.. By the way my car is a 49 plymouth 2 door coupe.
You didn't say what engine. When I put the Hemi in my 48 I used Ch***is Engeneering uppers & made my own lower & ****** mount. Thier ****** mount is way over priced considering how simple 1 is to make. I did use thier engine mount set to put a 318 in a 47, seemed to work well. They sent a disc brake kit for the 47, hub adaptors wouldn't fit. called & sent it back. Month or so later no sign of it, so I called & they said they sent wrong one. Well duh, wheres the right one? not impressed w service.
sorry about that, im planning on using a sbc with a th350 ******. by the way if you dont mind me asking, did you keep the stock steering on the 48 and 47? and did you have clearance problems because of the headers, if so what did you use?
My 48 Plym has a Cutl*** subframe, however the 47 Dodge has stock front. there was an article in R&C (later reprinted as a chapter in Tex Smith's Mopar Hot Rod book) on putting a 318 in a 46-8 Plym. with engine offset 1" to p***. side the exhaust man. for the boxey Darts curls around the steering column like it was made for it. Instructions for placing the engine mounts that Ply-Do sent made it a snap. I had only seen the m***ive factory ****** mounts prior to getting it from Ply-Do. When I saw it, it was "good god I payed that much for this". Simple & very little material cost to fab my own. Didn't use headers
My 48 Dodge has Fatman stub with the Mustang 2 with tubular a-arms. has a one inch drop arms and it sits pretty low. Running sbc and turbo trans
I think I've been waiting about 7 or 8 years for a Ply-Do book. They took my money and never sent anything. My son bought a disc brake conversion from Butches Rod Shop, (they are still around, I'll have to dig up their #, they don't have a web site.) the parts were all shipped from Ply-Do but were less expensive then Ply-Do wanted for them? Roberts Motor Parts won't help you, they only have stock parts. I thought someone on here was selling the disc brake kits, but I don't know who it was. Motor mounts weren't that bad, we built our own when we put the 360 in my son's 47 Plymouth. Offset the motor 2" to the right. We have headers with stock steering, what a pain in the *** that was! Block headers might work better, but things get pretty conjested around the steering and the starter for 4 headers tubes to run through there too. Fat Man Fabrications has a rack and steering kit for these old Mopars, probably have motor mounts too. www.fatmanfab.com Gene
I put small block mopars in a 39 and a 47, built my own mounts and offset the engine and used the Dart exhaust manifold. I seem to recall about 15 years ago asking for a ply-do catalog and never getting one...some things never change.
If you haven't already got it, check out the Tex Smith book how to build Chrysler, Plymouth and Dodge Hot Rods. I followed the book very closely when installing the 318 in my 40 Dodge. It provides alot of detailed insight. Even gives Mopar part numbers for necessary components like headers, oil pans, etc. It's good stuff! I can't even remeber where I bought my engine mounts, but 6 feet of 2x2 and you could make a set. Good luck!
it is pretty nice to have fatman stub but i dont think i have the experience to hack up the frame yet so im really leaning into just getting motor mounts, making my own ****** mount and finding a place that makes newer rack and pinion kits. and i think that only plydo (not sure) is the one that makes a rack and pinion kits for the 49 plymouth that uses a cavalier rack (dont know what year rack either), but plydo seems to be really busy, so i dont really know where/how to get newer steering that would clear the headers on the motor
fat mans got some stuff and try vintage power wagons for your motor stuff.they even stock a dual offy intake for the flathead.
Here are the PlyDo kit numbers for the parts you want: Disc brake installation kit: #TB-132 $220.00 (stock spindles are used with GM calipers/rotors, which you can get from your parts store.) Use stock master cylinder and pedals. Instructions and other specific parts required are listed with part numbers. If you need your front end rebuilt he can supply parts for that. If you want power brakes he has kits for that and cost depends on what you want. SB 350 motor mount kit: #216 (orig ISF + Rack/Pinion steer) $125.00 #216S (orig ISF + orig steering) $125.00 MoPar Small block motor mounts are same cost 318/340/360 TH 350 trans crossmember: #CTC4652 $195.00 (mopar crossmember same) Dropped 3" steering arms(includes front shock kit at no charge): # DSA463 $320.00. (must use GM calipers/Chrysler rotors.) He doesn't show dropped spindles in my catalog. That front shock relocation kit makes a world of difference in the ride. Rack/pinion kit: # TL-099 $199.00 (rack not included) Includes brackets, bolts, one steering U joint, and tie rod adapters. Inst included. I forget the make of rack he sells but just call him on that. Talk to Tom at 304-475-3245 for fitment of headers on your specific car. He will answer any question you can think of about your Plymouth. He only prints up so many catalogs at the beginning of the year and unless you order one early, he runs out. Prices may have gone up!
I know that Fatman carries dropped spindles for these Mopars as well as new upper shock mounts to relocate the top shock mounts from the upper A-arm to a frame mount for real dampening. Also the article in Tex Smith's book on engine swapping in late '40's Mopars used mounts from this guy and thought they were real good: http://www.mrstreetrod.com/cgi-bin/store/commerce.cgi?product=customparts&cart_id=7184967.4341 Someone here said that Butch's Rod Shop was still around but no website, sure could use their number as I remember they had some early '50's Mopar stuff that I and others sure could use. 'preciate it!
My 47 has stock front suspension with a cavalier rack. Magnum manifolds for a small block mopar and a rear sump pan clear everything nicely. Fatman and a few others have drop spindles as well as the rack kit. The rack kit in my opinion isn't worth the money for what you get. You can also try a guy that goes by the name 'Plymouth Doctor' in Hemmings. Seems like a decent guy with good prices.
"Mr. Streetrod" aka Manny out of somewhere in Socal has your shock and motor mounts and is very knowlegable about rodding old Mopars and very helpful. He has and does lots of stuff not shown on his website: http://www.mrstreetrod.com/ The guy on here that does the disc kits is Charlie. Another very helpful guy. Here is his website: http://www.rustyhope.com/ I'm using his disc kit on my 38 Chrysler. Seems to be just fine, but I'm not done so I can't give a final report yet. Lots of guys on the P15 D24 site doing this kind of stuff so it is worth introducing yourself over there: http://merc583.addr.com/cgi-bin/webbbs/webbbs_config.pl
thanks guys, and thanks 4woody for giving me info about mr.streetrod. im either going to call him or go to their shop and talk to him about the motor mounts and im also planning to buy the drop spindles and steering kit from fatman and this company called eci makes disc brake conversions that just slides onto the stock spindles, the price is about 500 something but it comes with everything you need like the calipers, brackets and hardware.
