yea, I pretty much agree with Jimmy. Usually when I see a period car with the axle in front of the grill, and no spring visible, its running torsion bars. Funny time for this to come up actually, Jeems thread on Volkswagen style torsion bar set-ups got me digging up old photos last night on the Johnny Hartman track roadster and the Spaulding Bros track roadster. I realize you probably arent thinking forties here, but it kinda relates to this. funny thing is, when I was looking at these cars, I ran across a photo of the Bob Ro**** '32, dated 1947, that looks like it might have the same set-up as Doane Spencers car, spring behind the axle, hangers through the bones, grill shell in front, so maybe thats NOT Doanes "invention".

  2. I'd like to see some good detail shots of old torsion bar setups. I really like the clean low look with no spring up front.

The Johnny Hartman car. Very slick car for 1948. Was a freakin rocket too, won a LOT of races...

I had posted this about a year ago on one of the T-bucket threads, but I cant find it, it must have been the one that got deleted, so I'll re-post it here. If you click on these a couple times, they will open up big enough to read the text.

    Just a thought Richard D
And only a guess of a thought at that, 'cause I cannot?? provide the picture proof.
But, is the Larry Shinoda Chopsticks Special II what your thinking about as an old timey example. That '28/'29 roadster body with it's hood and grille shell sitting upon a '32 frame, has the axle just ahead and level with the bottom of the shell. Therefore, I'm thinking spring behind axle.
Anyone care to remember with me?

or... I really don't know what the Shazbot I'm talking about:(

The ch***is in my avatar is based on a design offered by a company from Sante Fe Springs, U.S Speed sport? I think .Came from a "little How to book". They describe "lowering the car without the expense of a dropped axle" just as Devin has done. Their version uses a stock Model A frt. spring and attaching spring pins horizontally through the wishbone
