Building a 29' model A thinking the motor mounts would be in about the same place for a s.b.c as they would be for a hemi so I would build the s.b.c first then as you get the money build a hemi to put in it's place.

    christensen,
Sounds like you are stuck with a very old conundrum and after reading your last post you have made a decision. But let me throw this out to the m***es anyway.

I have used the small block chevy for a lot of years in any car that I just want to crawl in a drive. They are just easy to use and at least here are as plentyfull as fleas. Pretty easy to dress one to look old and if you were a mind to you could use front mounts and take a grinder to the block and fool the overwhelming majority of those reading this post into thinking it was an era correct 283.

That said while I own a pretty hot 350 now and the next car that I build may have a hood on it I find myself looking at flatheads and early '50s valve in heads for the car in question. Sometimes the easiest route is not always the best route.

Anyway looks like you have made up your mind. Good for you. Now build it and get some bugs on the front if it.

Slap your SBC together so you can drive your rod. In the meantime build a *****in' flattie.

If it doesn't matter to you, go with the Chev. They are the obvious choice because they are easy and cheap to use, and work well. Any other choice is going to be harder, more expensive, and may not even have as much HP.

  11. You do a better job with English than most of us could do with Swedish.

Actually, not. A SBC swap was the hot ticket back in the day. But - no center bolt heads/valve covers, and it must have an oil filler tube in the manifold.

Pretty easy to dress your 350 out right - swap heads/manifold/covers/etc.

And a SBC looks perfect with three carbs, but should be Rochester 2GCs.

Another option, based on availability, would be an early-50s GM V8 - Buick, Olds, Cadillac.

An early 322 Buick nailhead with a Buick transmission (manual or Dynaflow) connects to a closed driveline, so you can run a Ford torque tube rear and banjo. These motors looks great with 3 97s up top.
