Not the most traditional of topics but I need expert help and this place is chock full of experts...

We have a non-posi 10 bolt that needs to be posi...for two weekends of racing (hopefully). Maybe more depending on traction. Can't really expect the one legger to carry all the power - and we are making plenty of power with a semi radical SBC.

Our budget is near 0. A lot of people weld the spider gears. That is the last resort option. I was talking to an old timer several years back...he said to weld a bolt in between the spider gears at the top, then rotate the wheel till it stops and weld another bolt. This gives you some amount of slip before it locks? Sounded clever but I have never heard anyone else who has done this.

Will that work? Is it going to make it "catch" harder and break faster? IDK?

I did hear something about shimming spider gears once too? Not sure how that works? Is this a better option or the other?

....or do you have any ideas above/beyond this?

We are on a one week deadline - can't wait for parts and we're scraping money for what we already DO have around here.

    p.s.
Once this rear end stops being useful we do have a 9" Ford that will replace it. The Ford rear will back our power but is a horrible ratio for racing. We will have to wait for the budget to catch up anyway.

In the meantime - all we want to do is hit a couple races before the weather shits for the season and put a few ticks on our odometer...an 1/8th mile at a time...

    Thanks in advance HAMBsters.

Never heard of that, and sounds like it can shock the crap out of the rear end. With that budget, the best bet is to weld the spiders. This is not a street car, is it?

    No, Not a street car....
It is licensed and it could be driven, but it would be bad on all the expensive parts.

they used to have a gear that you changed out one of the spiders and it locked it .( looked like a smashed spider gear, but since you have a replacement and do not have time or money , weld the unit locked , the gears are hardened and once you weld on them they will start to crack over time from the welding process , so if you weld , do all of them so its solid as if you only do one it will break off . and once its done the only way your going to get the axles out is with a torch .

I might be trashed for sharing this...but..you can shim the side gears tight and it will hook hard as long as you have the rear wheel weight close to equal....
Pm me for details..as my info comes from off topic experience. ..lol.
