recently bought a house and I finally have a garage...

its an older 1 car garage. detached but 5 feet from the house..has electrical running to it, and has outlets outside, but only 1 inside...i need a few more outlets in the garage, and possibly 220 run.

also need to add another outlet in the house.

its borderline whether i can do it myself, but rather than risking burning the new house down...i figure i better get some help.

anyone in NJ an electrician??? I would need maybe 3 outlets run, maybe 220 and 1 inside.

to totally make this not off topic. here is a pic of the garage

you can see there is electric run to everywhere OUTSIDE the garage, but not in!! only 1 outlet :(

not sure if anything extra would need to be run for 220.

    Rob,

Been in electrical 'bout 45 years but I'm not in NJ. First consideration is the age of the house (that may help with existing wiring.)

Second, you should have a breaker in your house breaker box that feeds the garage. Is a single pole or double pole breaker?

Third, what is the wire size between the house & the garage.

Fourth, how many wires from the breaker box to the garage exist now?

Fifth, what is the size of the main breaker in the breaker box?

You will need 4 wires between the breaker box and the garage to have 220 service. Wire size will depend on what load you want to provide for (air compressor? welder? electric heater?)

PM me with some answers and I'll try to help further.

age is "old" but wiring is fairly new...i have actually 2 breaker boxes inthe ba*****t.

actually that second box might be just for the garage. since they had a pool at one time too...

thats why i need an expert haha.

yeah, ill check when i get home and see whats up.

I'd be willing to help. I am not an electrician, but have helped many people run power out to garages and home remodeling. Where in NJ are you? This job will be really easy if the current feed out to the garage has both phases and the wire is of sufficient gauge. Do you have any pictures?

dont have any pics, looks like the guy who did it, did a pretty good job.

i went out today and bought the pre-wired flex-conduit the outlets and boxes, etc.

I dont think i can run a 220 outlet but i thought about it and wont need it as i dont weld a lot (welder is 110 anyways) and i dont think im goin got get a compressor and run airtools...

im pretty sure i can do it myself as the junction boxes for the motion lights etc. are already run etc.

ill take some pics tomorrow of what im going to do and if i send them can ya tell me if im makin a boo-boo??

ok so i have 2 20 amp and 1 15 runs going out to the garage....i ripped out the cluster **** of what was out there.

    here is the plan.

3 motion lights and 2 long florecents on the 15 amp.

3 outlets on 1 20 amp and 4 on the other 20 amp. (2 are outside the garage and will rarely get used)

all 14awg solid wire in spiral conduit...should be no problem right?

i dont run many power tools (especially at once) i will have a fridge always on hooked up to 1 and i have a small drill press, bench grinder, etc. etc. but they will never be used at once..

sorry if this is really stupid questions......but im an electrical idiot,
