our '40 chevy p/u has a TH350, the cooler is not plumbed in yet, the connections are plugged at the trans - can we start and idle the engine this way or will it leak/damage the trans?? thanks-

Plugged is not good, run a loop of hose from one of the fittings to the other, let the trans fluid circulate, TEMPORARY only

  3. Yes , a circulation loop would be much better

Make sure that there's some fluid in the trans as well; don't want to run the pump or converter dry.

Built into the front pump of most transamatic automissions (including the TH350), is a "cooler by-pass valve"; it's purpose is to by-pass the cooler if it gets plugged or damaged in some way that blocks the coolers flow. So, the trans you have will "work", but, I'd still loop the ports together, or plumb in a cooler. And, like has already been mentioned, DO NOT run the trans "dry". Butch/56sedandelivery.
