Well I am up to paint on my 31 pontiac and am having a hard time trying to decide if I should paint the frame black or body color which will be pontiac nitewatch blue. I am going for a 60's build

same color as the body "might" look a bit 90's street roddish.

Yes it was done during the 60s, but so was black, and I even saw contrasting colors on new builds in mid 60s.....but black seemed more common in my area.

  5. I wrestled with this same thing on my car. I'm redoing it now with a red oxide/brown body with a satin black chassis. Now that it's coming together I'm glad I went with the black.

I'm leaning towards body color, black with dark blue isn't contrasting enough to be worthwhile on a channeled car. That having been said, metallic silver actually looked pretty good on Grouchos channelled 5 window, might work ok with dark blue as well..

How much attention do you want the frame to get? If its custom built with cool contours and deserves special attention paint it body color. If its not a significant piece of the build paint it black.

I was struggling with this a few weeks ago myself, and chose body color for the above reason and the fact that a T roadster body is visually too narrow to have a black chassis. At least in my case. Your poncho doesn't suffer that same fate, and may actually look better with a black chassis.

  10. I try to adhere to the kiss method when it comes to frames,,my thoughts would be black. HRP

  11. Depends if you're after a 60's Autorama show car look, or street racer. Body color frames seem more "finished" to me.

The body color is going to be very dark blue. The only frame visible is from the firewall forward and there is nothing that i am looking to highlight My initial plan was to paint the frame gloss black but that didn't seem right. Then after finally deciding on a body color I have been back and forth as to the frame color. The firewall and grill shell will be body color and the engine is red with a lot of pollished aluminum and that is what I want to feature. So I think satin black is the way I will go

You won't able to see any of my chassis once the body goes on, but I still wanted it to be "right". Matter of personal preference I suppose.

You seem to be going for more of a street rod look I am looking for a more traditional look

Usually I'd say to go with black, but considering the red engine and blue body, I'm of the thinking that there might be a few too many colors going on by adding a black frame. It could make it look a bit cluttered around that area, so for that reason, I'd say body color. It's the sort of thing that people won't consciously notice, but the overall effect will make a huge difference and keep it looking simpler and neater.

On my dark reddish brown tudor I went satin black.
On the ' 29 roadster the frame, firewall, grills shell are gloss blue and the body is satin blue, both the same color. Very dark blue.

Both look good. I really couldn't imagine having the tudor chassis being body color, and I think the roadster wouldn't look right w a black frame

Case by case basis I think

  24. Have thought if I ever redo the coupe I might do hammer tone on the frame. Painted granddaughters swing frame with black brush on. Looked real nice. Did dry shiny and slick.

I'd feel better giving an opinion after seeing some photos, what type of front end is in the car? Will the firewall be body color or white? I'm going for the Eastwood Chassis Black on my Roadster, really like the look of it. Bob :)

Well, and the fact that its a chanelled car makes me lean that way as well. When a car is chanelled, the frame rails forward of the firewall visually become more an extension of the body, rather than a separate part.
And the body color firewall closes the deal.

I would paint the engine body color and the frame gloss black.
