Im looking for under hood shot that shows the routing or shop manual diagram for a 57 Ford Custom 300 with 6 cylinder. I have read on here about the vacuum replacements and fixes but I think mine may be hosed wrong. I know that there is a fuel pump that is also a vacuum pump. Mine is not that set up. Thanks.
On a Ford, the vacuum lines went from a port on the intake manifold to the booster on the fuel pump then to the wiper motor. This was done in an attempt to take up any loss of vacuum when the carburator went to wide open throttle. I just worked on a '56 Chevy that uses direct vacuum off the intake manifold. I could not get the vacuum wipers to work. I contacted www.wiperman.com and sent the unit to him for repair. He was great to deal with and the car now has wipers that work.
on mine it does not use the fuel pump. It comes out of the intake then to a "T" fitting. one goes to a check valve then to a cacuum can. the other leg off the T goes to top of wiper. The wiper has port on the bottom. I thought maybe it was an exhaust port. Im thinking remove the T, hook the can to the bottom port on wiper. Would this then give a push / pull effect or push / push and be air locked?
Nothing goes to the port at the bottom. You can have the wiper rebuilt. Friken (sp) wiper in New York. It will work great. They have all trico parts. Used them before.
my 56 6yl had the dual action pump and appeared to be factory. I'm not sure if that was an option? I put a 352 in it and used an NORS dual action pump for an Edsel. I'm sure a replacement dual action would cost more so some one could have cheaped out in all those years. From the intake to the pump and from the pump to the wiper motor.
ok, I went out and switched some hoses around. Tried a few different things. The best set up is byp*** the can and hook top port to intake vacuum port. They work probably almost as good as new. thought I would share what I found so far. I would like to still see a original set up. Thanks
I've had vacuum wipers on a couple cars and always thought routing them through a vacuum canister would be the ideal situation. No more stopping of the wipers while accelerating. If your canister is good, I would try to incorporate it. Ron.
Got a '57 manual out. Says one hose pump to manifold, other -pump to wipers. If you disconnect the manifold to pump hose and put a vacuum gauge on the wiper to pump hose, it should pull 10 in of vacuum with the engine idling. I'll look for a routing diagram. RB
Hello I have a 58 Fairlane my question is. If you go right from a vacuum source to the vacuum wiper motor what controls the wipers? Don't you have to go from vacuum source to the dash board windshield wiper control then to the vacuum wiper motor.Seems to me going straight to the vacuum wiper motor would run the wipers 24/7?
Not sure on the 58. But my 57 has a cable that goes to the wiper motor to turn it on and off. So full time vacuum is what the motor would need.
