When I pulled my column out of a 65 chevy the center of the horn button was in bad shape. This is how I made a custom insert. The first thing I did was take out the old one and use it as part of the fix. I had a skull that I wanted to make into the horn button so I ground away the back of the skull and hot glued the skull to the original button. Then I smoothed everything out with clay.
Now I make a mold by using stuff called mold builder. You can buy it at a hoby store. I mount the mockup onto a solid surface and begin to cover it with the mold builder. The first few coats have to be light to make sure you get good detail, after that you can make the coats thick. While I was at it I mocked up a skull and wings pin.
The finished mold. Now that the mold is finished I use cast n craft resin to make the new horn button. I mixed some glitter in the first two castings. I ended up making a third casting that was just clear. When it dries the resin is a little smaller than the original piece. I overcame this by filling in the gap around the button with Bondo and then I painted the button.
The finished horn button. Also is there anyone out there that can do metal casting. I have made some wax moldings of the skull with wings and tried the lost wax method but aparently I suck when it comes to casting with metals. The one here is painted with chrome and gold paint.
Nice work man, it looks killer. Here are some casting links http://www.host33.com/casting/ http://www.artmetal.com/project/TOC/proces/cast/furnace.html http://www.eugenesargent.com/casting.htm http://www.duncanamps.co.uk/metal/projects/projects.php http://www.reil1.net/design1.shtml http://www.myhomefoundry.com/
Im going to use leds. I just havent decided on the color yet. Im also debating on geting some pinstriping done on the skull. Tysond Thanks for the metal casting links.
You can just cast the wax, then send them out to be cast with the lost wax method. Somebody here has a connection with a bronze foundry.
