hood springs

could anyone tell me on 1941 chevy 2 dr sedan here is a long shaft and short shaft on spring,is the long shaft installed facing up or down

 

The long shaft I believe has more of a triangle and on it so that would go down to the brace. the other end is u shaped and connects to the top.

I also found an easy way to do the springs is put in the top hole first and use a brake spring tool to pry it down to the brace. delicate but violent process!!
