I've looked for the thread where you use the 40 hubs instead of the 46's. I want to keep the hub on the inside. I know there is more machine work, but that's ok. Can anybody help me, PLEEEEAAA***SSEEEEE? LOL Thanks, Ty
Ya, thanks. Isn't he using F2 brakes? Does the 40 brakes work as well? In no way was i trying to snap at you. I guess i wasn't clear on which actual brakes being used.
I believe there is additional machine work to the outside lip to mate the 40 backing plate to the buick drum. I used the first response method from Chaddilac using the F2 plates, mainly to get self energizing brakes. The biggest thing to machine is the hub centric ring and outside dia. of the hub. I use 51-52 ford F1 front hubs instead of the 40, and worked fine.
I've done dozens of the Buick drum to early Ford hub conversion and I've never liked the final outcome of the 40 hubs. It's still the most successful conversion using the 46/48 hub especially if using the F2 backing plates. I can't speak to the F1 hubs? Also done several with the Walden hub kit, worked great.
Just use a set of Bobby Walden hubs. They use stock 28-48 Ford wheel bearings and the drum slides on like ****er. No machining. If you us Wilson Welding backing plates, it is a total bolt on operation. No machine work at all. How easy is that?
Or you could use the Buick hubs with bearing adapters. Just re-drill the bolt pattern to whatever you want and you're golden. r
