Hi all, I've been reading post for a while, very sorry, did not know about the introduction until now. I've been working on early fords for a few years, but recently started a 33 Plymouth five window build. Looking forward to loading some photos soon. CR
I picked up a rebuilt 218 flathead six that I was thinking about running. However, after a couple of weeks trying to pick up some speed equipment for the 218, it became clear that it would be more expensive than I originally thought. So for the money (a lot both ways) and drivability, Im looking at a baby hemi. Plus, I think a baby hemi looks great it a 33 Coupe, so that is the plan for now. Thanks CR
Welcome fordv8 from Arizona. As an older hotrodder, ex-Calif resident, and MOPAR lover for years, I appreciate your enthusiasm for a "baby hemi". However, I have had many early Hemis and the only practical thing about them is they are "cute babies". I guess you are referring to the Desoto and early Dodge Red Rams ? There is very little in the way of speed equipment available for them, and when you find it, it will be expensive. A 331 Chrysler Hemi, while not a baby, is a better bet, but nearly as expensive as a 354 or 392. Lots of 331s out there. (And consider trans adapter, trans choice, etc.) Starting a project you have a lot of room for making changes and choices. Maybe it's the old man in me, but after so many hot rods through the years and all the "stuff" that goes into them, the drive train is just about 30% of the total car. Depending on what the interior, wiring, body, brakes, etc. is like, I would get a decent used 318/360, put in a cam for a little sound, and a Torqueflyte, and get the car rolling first and do the "Baby Hemi" thing later on. Or chances are the '33 may languish out in the back under a tree until you find a oil pan or intake manifold or camshaft for that Red Ram cutie. Good Luck! Love the early Mopars!
Thank you for the advice. You are correct, I am thinking about a 241 hemi and the 331 hemi would be a better choice. Its very early in the build, I have a ton of bodywork to do, and parts to buy. I like the idea of the 318/340/360, it would be a great motor and I could drive the car while I work on it. That was my original plan with the flathead six was just to get running, do the body work, and change the motor later. I am beginning to think a better plan would be sell the flathead six and use the money for a small block mopar. I would be on the road faster and cheaper. Thanks CR
