I have done a search and didn't find the info I am looking for. My 48 Chevy grill is rusted on the back side while the chrome on the outside is in pretty good condition. Will a molasses dip for rust removal have any adverse effect on the chrome?

    Thanks for any input.

I don't think it will affect the chrome, but then again it all depends on how long your gonna leave it in for, its slightly acidic. Youtube has a bunch of videos on the molasses steeping for rust removal if you haven't already checked it out.

You should try a test with a chrome plated part first to find out for yourself.

No it won't. Doesn't seem to harm the base metal at all.

I have used the mollasses method for over ten years and can say it will not harm the chrome.

I have messed around with the molasses on parts and don't think that it will do anything to chrome. I have not done it with anything chrome so I am just giving it my best guess.

Is all molasses from the feed store about the same strength, and if so, how much water dilution should one use for the quickest results ?

I use ten parts water to one part molasses. The way it works is to put the parts in the tank ( two feet high, two feet wide and four feet long), dump in a pale of molasses, then fill the pale up ten times with water. Over the years I have done hundreds of parts using this method. Works well at taking off rust, will not fix parts that are rusted through and does not take off paint. After the parts have soaked for about three weeks, take them out and give them a rinse with a garden hose using a pressure nozzle. Let the parts dry for an hour or so, then take an electric drill with a wire brush attachment and go over the entire surface of the part. Should come up with clean metal.

    l used 9 to 1 in a 500 gallon tank
    worked real well
If there is rust under the chrome plating and the molasses has a path to it, it will eat the rust under the chrome leaving the chrome disbonded from the metal

  12. Ive just pulled some chrome spanners that had very light rust on them. A week soaking, and theyre good. Im using a 7 to 1 mix. I also pull all parts out after 7 days, pressure wash, then put back untill rust all gone. Seems to work quicker that way.
