Hello All, Im new to the forum and looking for some opinions. I have a 1946 Chevy Stylemaster, that is currently all original. I recently purchased a Chevy 327 Small block, that I plan to put into the 46 this fall. Aside from having to change the motor mounts, bell housing and throttle linkage, I plan to replace my clutch. Ive been told by a few reputable people in my area that by doing so, the current/original transmission will work well with the 327 and won't need to be changed out right away. This brings my first question, is this true? And my second question, in doing such a drastic engine swap, what other things should I plan to change that I may not be thinking of? I will be using all MSD Pro billet inginition components.
There are 2 transmissions, one will bolt up to the 55 up V8 bell, the other won't. The difference is the location of the bolt holes. If you can find the right box the internal parts all interchange. Or, you may already have the right one. Firewall braces need to be hammered back for clearance. Exhaust interferes with the steering, you need a front dump manifold. Remember the drive train was made for a 85HP six, it will stand the gaff if you baby it and wait until you get into high and develop some forward momentum before you give it the works.
Not much gain in performance with putting in a V8 with stock ****** and suspension. Top speed will still be 55 with everything stock. That factory rear end should have 411s in it and should be swapped for 355s from any of the aftermarket companies.
