I found a thread on this Hokey Ass Message Board dealing with SW gauges at http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=79278. The newest post was dated 2005. Most of the posts were very critical of the SW gauges back then. I would assume that SW has improved over the past few years since they are still in business. I am looking for traditional looking and functional gauges and really like the SW Wings gauges with domed lens. Also like the Autometer gauges with domed lens. Anybody have experience with the "new" SW Wings style gauges or Autometer?
Yes, I have a new set of the Stewart Warner Wing gauges in my car. I purchased the full set and used every one with the exception of the speedometer; simply because I found a really cool old skool speedometer. So far I really like them. Knock on wood I have not had any problems with any of them. I really like them, IMHO they look great and I have no complaints. I would recommend them. If interested, here are some photos of them mounted in my dash. They do have a slight dome to them. Click on each photo to enlarge them. http://www.flickr.com/photos/60403447@N02/ Good luck with your selection process. Let us know what you decide.
My Son has a set in his rpu and I liked them so much I ordered a set for my rpu project. But funny thing.....three of his showed up with the needles laying between the glass and the dial, and when I ordered mine two came in with the needles off too. They stood behind them, but it just seems like the needles fall of pretty easily. Don
My speedo needle fell off too! Probably the little kids that assemble them aren't strong enough to get them on all the way.
My electronic water temp gauge read 40 degrees hotter than it should. Exchanged it for a mechanical one and it works fine. Also had an electronic sending unit for an oil pressure gauge leak right outta the box. Gary
The quality of the older ones was generally good, (assembled in Mexico w/ U.S. parts),but the new mexican repros are junk. My tach's needle was off too, and I would doubt the accuracy of most. There is a good reason the originals are spendy today....
Well...at this point it is 6 bad reviews to 3 good reviews. I had a little trouble with statistics back in 1967 in college, but its seems to me that these gauges suck about as bad as they did when the other discussion was done in 2005.
Thank you for the compliments, Bandit24. I wish I knew how to fly a helicopter, I would fly an air ambulance.
