This is some rare "Color" footage, taken at Portland Speedway around 1948. Portland was a large 1/2 mi paved track. You will notice a yellow '27 Roadster #1, that one belonged to my old friend and long time Indy racer Rolla Vollstedt, and was driven by the great Len Sutton. The Flagman is Pat Vidan, who became the Chief Starter at Indy in '62. I don't know for sure who shot this footage, possibly Ray Jackson Sr. The disc was given to me, and I sent a copy to fellow HAMBER Zach Suhr, who set it up on U-Tube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Hm_Dp-qvmY&feature=youtu.be
really cool to see local film from that era, thanks for the video! I got to see your 34 5-window Marty at the slow-pokes car show this year. it was cool to see a hamb story stuck to the window explaining where the car came from.
RRR, That 34 belongs to a fellow HAMBER (Chop-IT), I only helped him with some background on the car. Sadly I sold both of my Model 40's, '33 and '34 both 5w coupes, years ago.
Very cool. Years ago I bought a 27 track rosdster that raced a portland. It was yellow and red two tone. Had flathead with in and out box. On t frame with 30 grill shell had bell steering wheel hooked to franklin box. The bad was it sat outside for years.
No I gave them with the car when I sold it. Bought it for 1500. with trailer. Back before ebay was well know.
Hey Marty, I lived in Portland in about 96. I had my track Roadster up there with me. I was renting the bottom of a house from a women there. She had family over one day and I had my Roadster out. One of the Aunts saw it and said "that's just like the one that killed Benny" I tried to get more info, but nobody would talk about it. Never could get any info as long as I was there. I ran around with Dan Leedom, Rich Hoak, Sam Parker, and that group. I miss Portland.
I will send you a pm, about the "Benny", the woman may have been referring to, it's a sad story. I see Dan and Sam around the swap meets and events, Rich and I go back 45 years! We have a great fraternity of car guys in this area, and plenty of activities from May through October. I see you were from Fremont at one time, that was the "Hotbed" of Nostalgia Drag Racing, every spring we used to load up and head down there to race, back in the 80's.
