Is it true that a 1941 thru 1952 chevy spindles will interchange. I have researched and have found out that the inner and outer bearings are the same. The brake shoes, kingpins and the brake hub dust shield are the same also. Of course the brake drum is not the same since there are 6 holes in the 1948 and older chevs. Another trick is to swap the sides and it will hammer it to the dirt, as long as you heat the spindle and bend it straight and true. SO, Is it true?
I think it was rod & Custom that did a real good article on that very thing. See can you find it. No I don't remember when..Can hardley remember my name.
Have to think they're the same to '54, except the 54 gives you an inch or so of lowering. I swapped '54 brakes right onto '50 spindles no problem.
seems to be some confusion about spindles vs spindle uprights. 54 uprights will give you the drop. 49-54 p***enger spindles are all the same. swapping sides will not hammer anything into the dirt. 49-54 p***enger spindles have one part number, 39-48 have another. I have found that even though something may have a different part number they will interchange. however I do not believe that to be the case in this instance. inner and outer bearings have the same part number from 46-54. what is it you are trying to do?
Im just tring to be crafty or cheap, wichever it may be. Trying to find out all my options before buying droped spindles for the darn thing.
Have a 47 Chevy, is there a way to have power steering with the stock front end? Car has a 3.1 V6 Camaro engine, rebuilt front end. Thanks
Just how much does the 54 upright lower a 49-52 Chevy car? not sure... maybe an inch. FATMAN uprights only give 2" and they are big money.
Is fatman the only dealer of these dropped spindles? I have found a Motors Handbook from 1954 saying that the spindles and the other junk will inter change
I'll tell you my story. It worked out well. I bought Fatman uprights for my 54, paid a bunch of money. This was years ago. When I finally did the job 5 yrs ago, I eBayed' the stock uprights. Got back more than 1/2 the cost. This is a Corvette part that fits to 62. Them guys will kill for these parts. Frank
there is no "up" unless you are talking Corvette up til 62. 55 p***enger cars went to ball joint suspension and spindles and uprights were eliminated. 53 and 54 uprights give the drop.
step your a arms i did on my 52 easy and it gives you and inch or 2 lowered. Also all your stuff bolts back on if you got fatman they are 399 and then another 180 for the dropped steering i did it all for about 15 bucks in metal.
This article was huge help. I have a set of 54' spindles with discs that will apparently bolt right to my 41'. Happy hot rodder
You can uses a HHR or Cobalt column which has Electric steering. There are also aftermarket Electric steering that can be used with most any box.
