in your model A & T sedans? i know some of you use the original tank in the 28/29 sedans, but what else are you fellas using? also, are the more door A sedans longer than the 2 door sedans?
If you have an aftermarket frame (without the kick up in back) you can use some pickup tanks (behind the seat type) and build your rear seat over it. depends where you want to put it. A 15 gallon tank from a postal jeep is a nice rectangular unit, 23 x 16 x 10 as I remember. Found a new one on the web for about 150. If you are running fenders, there are saddle tanks.
I am using an alluminum water tank useed in a boat it fits perfectly at the rear of my car up against the back it sits between the 2 doddy panel seams and under the rear windoe. I paid $40.00 for it at a metal recyclers and its a a heavy guage aluminium. There was allready holes in it for fuel lines but we had to cut a hole for the fuel guage sender unit. But for 40 bucks not bad I thought.John
I am using a Campbell-Hausefield 11 gal. airtank. A filltube,a pickup going in from the top to just about the bottom, and a Jc whitney sender unit/gauge. It is held in by chains,in the backseat area of my a sedan.Sparky
Thanks Richie. I hope you can join us at the halloween bash next sunday. The TN guys are planning on meeting at waffle house exit 46 at 9am. Do a search on halloween party.BTW speedway has pretty neat aluminum tanks that can be used for fuel tanksSparky
Built my own tank. Holds about 13.5 gallons. The tank goes in the back then a firewall covers it and the seat back mounts to there. Here is a couple mockup pics from the build One of area with the tin work done and done with the back seat in.
i want to see some more pics of this setup! is the tank also the floor of the car like in the mustangs? can you see it from below the car?
In 1977 I used a mustang gas tank in my 29 Model A Pickup... it fit behind the differential with a custom "angle iron framework" bolted under the bed. But I didn't think that it would work under a coupe or sedan because the rear of the cars are abrupt... and don't have alot of "overhang" past the differential. I like the Jeep Idea...
Boones, That's pretty cool. If it fits inside an A sedan like that, then it might fit under an 'A' RPU bed pretty nicely. I'm looking for ideas for my '29 RPU on '32 rails, to mount the tank under the bed, between the cab and the rear end. Do you have the dimensions of this Mustang tank? Thanks.
Hows the durability on cardboard? Does the sloshing in the tank break it down much? Just joking couldn't resist with the mock up pic.
The fordor is exactly the same dimensionally as a tudor sedan. I went with a 11-gallon spun aluminum tank. Its all I had room for, but since mine is bagged, and has a 19" rear kick-up, mine is not a good judge of space. The tank covers the bottom 1/2" inch of the rear window. Since my roof is just under 40" with the bags aired out, it'll be easy to fill
I'm useing an aluminium I/O boat tank. Not sure if it will fit your application but something to think about.
Looks like this but the fill is on the short side, so you can mount it vertically and the "x"s are on the sides, and the hose barbs are low on the sides. Wouldn't be hard to convert one from here
I just picked up a 15.3 gal beer keg im going to strap down in the trunk of my 54 chev. I know alot of rat rodders and stuff used these. Im building a custom but im pretty sure its going to go well with the whole look.
Yep definitely the old "10 lbs of shit" deal. Still gotta mount the battery opposite the air tank, then I'll officially have no room left
Sorry it took so long to reply, been on the road.. the Mustang tank set up is not a bad thing, if you do not plan to use a back seat, or if you do, you do not plan to chop it. The tank is about 7" tall, 38 wide and 30 deep. I built a rank out of square tubing and 16 ga to box it in. It is then bolted to the subrails with rubber inbetween to seal it. It is strong and can be used as a floor. Since I plan to run a cover over the back area, it will work good for me, allowing me to put stuff on top of it. the entire bottom of the tank is exposed to the outside (no floor under it) so if it ever sprung a leak the fuel out go outside and not inside.... I was going to do as MP33 did (I really like his set up and may change to it if I go with a rear seat someday). but found this tank and the price was right. The only concern i had with MP33 set up was the short filler tube and have fuel splash back out under hard launches.. with the longer tube, I can launch and the fuel should not make it all the way up... hope this helps. I have more pics of the fabrication on the site...link below
cool thanks! i plan on running a back seat with a mild chop and channel so maybe this isn't the best thing for me. i want to have a back seat so the wife and daughter can ride too, but the whole gas tank next to the back of the car thing kinda freaks me out. i'm hoping for a good tank up front, but i know how that goes.
