I use a Carter P4070 (5 - 7 PSI, no regulator needed) with a steel filter before it at the tank and a paper filter at the carburetor. Nice pump but man is it LOUD !
I have been in your shoes,DO NOT use a filter with a paper element and especially a FRAM POS which burned a pump up with a couple hours on it also. This works well and can be taken apart for cleaning and is compact http://www.summitracing.com/parts/rus-645120/overview/ also comes in 5/16"
I have a fram canister filter in front of my carter pump in my truck this setup has lasted for 75k miles so far I change the paper filter every 5k
That Summit is the filter I use at the tank -- sintered bronze or so-called steel filter. A paper filter is fine at the carb. (Suck steel, push paper.) My carter is rubber mounted with the bushing mounts that came with it, guess I should add more though.
I recently installed an Edelbrock electric fuel pump on my non-stock 1948 Plymouth. It replaced a "Mister Gasket" POS that failed. It's mounted with what appears to be an ignition coil bracket, and a rubber isolator. Fairly quiet, and no regulator required. So far, it works very well.
I too had a Carter low pressure fail on me recently. It might have had 1500 miles on it and yes I did have a filter between it and the tank. Luckily I had a spare pump with me just in case. I've always been a bit leery of electric pumps.
I use an inexpensive 10 micron Summit filter ahead of my electric fuel pumps, and it sure seems to lengthen the life of electric pumps. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-g1507
Did you have it mounted with the motor down? Carter's mount that way and are cooled and lubricated by the fuel.
yes^^^^. Got another one today. And a pre-filter. This is on a Mercruiser 250, and I think there is no fuel pump lobe on the cam. So I have to have a good pump. I might buy a spare and put in trunk. A bit pricey, but better than being stranded.
Motor can should be pointing toward the ground. Electric terminals on the bottom. The motor can is intended to fill with fuel while the pump is running. Here's a pic of the one I installed on my T. Actually the final version has the filter after the pump, but this is the only shot I have. This one has close to 14000 miles on it. BTW Holley pumps mount with the motor up.
Since you need a low pressure pump run this number Carter P60504 on Amazon.com they are running a deal on them, several guys in my Ford group run them on their flatheads.
