steering box

    have a steering box on a 1929 ford don't know what it is #8129400101 on top on side 8129501 101 also has in casting either a ze or zf in script type lettering in side a circle anyone know what this is thanks

    VW bus? It is some later model foreign car I am sure.

    Anyway,

    This site suggests that it really might be a steering gear for a VW Microbus or similar model. Note that one of your two casting numbers is mentioned in the last post.

    And ZF is in fact a Deutsch manufacturer of gears unt vat not.

    Hadn't realized that Ferdinand von Zeppelin started the outfit, but that's not entirely unexpected as he was, at one point, the industrial base of Friedrichshafen.

    Makers of steering boxes, mostly very good manual transmissions, automatics of much more variable quality, and a bunch of other stuff for auto companies pretty much everywhere.

    Anyone using one of these on a t bucket? I got one with a project that was not finished. Not sure if I should use it.

    I had a VW bus steering box on my T bucket in Texas in the 70's and it steered ok but there are better units out there. We had to modify the pitman arm to get it to work with a regular Ford style tie rod end on the drag link.
