I think HRP has got you this time. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=788920 Anyway, This site suggests that it really might be a steering gear for a VW Microbus or similar model. Note that one of your two casting numbers is mentioned in the last post. http://www.bullikartei.de/cms/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=4273&forum=1 And ZF is in fact a Deutsch manufacturer of gears unt vat not.
Zahnradfabrik Friedriechshafen AG. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ZF_Friedrichshafen Hadn't realized that Ferdinand von Zeppelin started the outfit, but that's not entirely unexpected as he was, at one point, the industrial base of Friedrichshafen. Makers of steering boxes, mostly very good manual transmissions, automatics of much more variable quality, and a bunch of other stuff for auto companies pretty much everywhere.
Anyone using one of these on a t bucket? I got one with a project that was not finished. Not sure if I should use it.
I had a VW bus steering box on my T bucket in Texas in the 70's and it steered ok but there are better units out there. We had to modify the pitman arm to get it to work with a regular Ford style tie rod end on the drag link.
