And here's my original intake I had 26 years ago as well. Not sure if it is well suited to a 283 but I do have it. It's a GM aluminum with a bow tie stamped on it. Casting number 14044836. Gonna try and look that up.

Thanks for sharing your story, it brought back some memories. When I was a kid (56 now) we took a SBC over a buddys house 2 blocks away on a wooden creeper. Swore that sucker was gonna break in two everytime we hit a crack in the road but we made it.

Talk about HAMB-friendly pull toys! This one sounds like a lot of fun, especially with the kids involved. I'll bet they'll love telling the story in school to their friends.

maybe if it rained hard enough you could have floated it home with a hippo shaped boat like that one hamber did to rescue a car body from a body of water IIRC

That intake manifold is a Chevrolet Service Replacement manifold for the 1969 Z/28 302 motor. Good intake...ports might be a little large for your head ports.

  8. Great story! Dad closed the last Coast to Coast warehouse and shut off the lights. Sad day when a large company like that just gets dissolved by the new owners.

It is sad, the world sure has changed a lot since then. That was a really nice store also. Much different than the today.

Hitting that light switch for the last time must of been hard.

What can we do with it exactly? I'm all ears but I have some re-learning to do.

No, I'm a self employed plumbing contractor. I'd be happy to take him up on his offer as well as pay him for his services. It would be great to do that instead of some online store. I'm just not sure what's possible with this, I figured it would be no good.

I'll send Bubba a PM. It would be just a cool story to have a fella on the board be part of this. That in itself has value to me. And just to re-use it would be awesome......for many reasons.

Gotta tell ya Larry, reading that really made me feel good. I don't know exactly why but that made my day. Thanks for looking that up for me and taking the time. Wow, the original distributor, how cool is that?

HAHAHAHA That was the exact thing I was thinking.

Very cool story, always nice seeing another 283 come back to life, especially one with some history to the owner.

Hey guys, thanks for the support. Seriously, I kind of need that. I feel so incredibly out of touch with cars for the simple reason I haven't done something like this in a very long time. I was able to get the old 46 truck started after sitting for a few years and it felt really good but this is a big step.

And honestly, its more than just the engine for me. I was so fortunate growing up to have a Dad who spent time with me. He was always there for me no matter what. Lately, I feel as if my son is slowly growing disconnected from me....the exact opposite of what I had as a youth. My business has grown and I have put far too much emphasis on that rather than where it should be, with my kids. This engine, and I have no idea where it will take me, is really just an attempt to make right what I have failed at.

Cars have a way of doing that. Old cars have a way of connecting people. Boy, it seems like only yesterday that I can hear my Dad explaining to me how a real V8 sounds. I remember how excited he was even explaining it to me and how he smiled so passionately when doing so. He wanted so much for me to understand that. And he was right. The first time I heard the engine, which is now in my garage, was like a magical moment in my life. I just want my kids to share the same experience. Cubic inches don't matter to me, or high tech heads or the latest fuel injection. What matters to me in this endeavor is for my kids to hear this little orange engine purr like a kitten and develop great memories along the journey to get it. And I really am looking forward to it.

I'm really glad you guys get to be part of it also, it makes it that much better. And it's me that's fortunate to have you along on the ride.

    Have a good night fellas.

Did some more research and digging. The 283 was pulled when the car had about 36k miles.

Was it rebuilt before that? No idea. I was able to track down the original owner when purchased new and he has passed away. After the Vietnam war he committed suicide survived only by his sister who has no memory or recollection on the history. It was a hard phone call but she was happy to hear her brothers engine was being worked on. I assured her it's in good hands. Nice gal.

This weekend it's getting torn down and I'll provide photos as well.

Wow that just makes the story that much more amazing...I cant wait to see where this story goes and how it ends up. Sucks real bad to hear about a brother who served and left this world too early...

It sure does, I was really wishing to speak with him. I would like to think he'd like this. Well, at least that's what I want to believe anyhow.

But hey, we make the best of it and have fun. Do it justice. Do it old school and make new memories.

I'm thinking solid lifters, dual quads, power packs with 184's, very mild cam and figure out a car it will go in.
