Looking for someone in the area to possibly do my father in laws 30 Chevy coupe. Funds are really low. Thought maybe there's someone out there that getting established or trying to get some work out in the public eye. The current interior is decent but it's all just drab light gray. Looking for the cab and trunk in white tuck and roll with black carpet. Pretty standard stuff. We're getting close to getting the car back together and it's been a long, expensive journey so the interior is a luxury item at this point. Thought there may be someone hungry out there. Thanks all. tuck and roll is expensive because it is time consuming, pleated is cheaper because it is easy. Material has a lot to do with what the price is and how are your seats? I know a few people in marinas that do upholstery... Are your springs broken? (foam is expensive for the stuff that you need so if that needs to be put on that is an added expense). What else needs to be done? headliner? door panels? carpet? Why bother with the interior right now if the funds are tight? Why not just go enjoy it and work on it down the road to do it right? Doing interior on the cheap is like rattle canning a car instead of doing a correct paint job. I have done both ways and the more you spend on a decent interior job, the better off you will be... when you use the cheap stuff you will have to do it again in short order. for example... the seat to be reupholstered can be anywhere between $200 and $500 in materials alone... usually shops would charge $500-800 for a seat alone (not tuck and roll)... so consider this. You could find someone to do it with fabric store kind of crap... I wouldn't use it if I were you. You can pick up the foam in the same spot, it just will break down faster than the automotive grade stuff. It may benefit you to find someone that already makes the covers and just get yourself hog ring pliers and rings and do it yourself... you can save a lot of money that way
I'm rather like 1959Apache in that if funds were low I'd be putting the money into the mechanical end of the build rather than changing the interior because the color doesn't quite suit me now if the interior is serviceable and not torn all to hell. As far as finding someone to do the interior. The best method I have found is to go to the local car shows and cruise nights and when you see a fairly fresh interior done in the style and quality you want ask the guy with the car who did the interior. Most folks will tell you more than you want to know about their interior and who did it when they might clam up if you ask the color of their paint job. Find several cars or trucks done the way you want that truck done and you most likely have found your guy.
Don't doubt the current interior is usable. It's my father in laws last hurrah (he's 76 and starting to slow down quite a bit). Funds have been replenished at least 3 times. The mechanical is very sound and for the most part finished or at least the parts are on hand. I was just hunting around for someone that might be young and hungry and lolling to get his work out there. Not looking for a show job, just something solid. Don't worry, he's planning on driving the wheels off of it even if he had to sit on a milk crate. Seat, headliner, door panel and trunk are in real decent shape. The dull gray just punks the vibe of the car. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
How the hell does auto correct get lolling from wanting? Stupid phone. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Like I said man, the price for materials is what kills the cheap price. Good Luck! Hope you find someone locally! I am glad that he is still able to drive it!
Based on where you are located you will find the best deals if you can speak spanish or take a hispanic buddy with you and some Bud Light Not joking.
If the upholstery is in good shape, but you don't like the color, you could always try one of the upholstery dyes. Used it before on the vinyl door panels, padded dash, and sunvisors in an old GMC truck. Looked good and lasted a long time. Your mileage may vary on seat upholstery...
try Jaime's Upholstery on Mckinley-Blackstone. Used to be reasonable and good work but that was years ago when he was getting going. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
