change filter or fuel pump. check fuel lines. gas tank clogged.

  3. Mechanical pump? disconnect the fuel line and see if gas pumps out when turning over the engine. Could be a plugged line...blow air back thru it to clear it. Could be a blocked strainer in the tank......no easy fix other than to take it apart.

  4. It could also be the pickup tube inside the tank. Happened on my '38 Ford p/u. Nearly ran me crazy before I figured it out. It would start and run fine, then act like it was running out of gas when I Had 1/2 tank. I replaced fuel pump and filter, no change. Blew out the line, no change. Finally tracked it down to a little rust hole in the pickup tube. As long as fuel was above the hole it was fine. When it got down below the hole, the fuel pump started sucking air instead of gas, and I was suddenly running out of gas.

I had similar situation, pea gravel in the fuel tank. I replaced everything trying to fix it, it wasn't until I pulled the tank that I found it.

I assume you tried putting more gas in the tank. Today's gas seems to be hard on older fuel pumps. If it is an old original pump, it's a good idea to change it as the diaphragm also deteriorates with age. A replacement pump will be designed to work with current fuels. If the diaphragm fails. it can put fuel into the oil pan instead of the carburetor or spray it outside the pump.

Another thing that can happen if the car has been sitting for a while is the gas can evaporate leaving the inside of the tank coated with the remains. When you put new gas in and drive it, eventually the fresh gas washes the crud loose on the inside of the tank which can plug the screen on the pickup inside the tank, get caught in the check valves in the pump or clog the filter between the pump and carburetor.
