I have a 54 bel air and want to swap out the closed driveline while keeping the 235. A friend gave me a TH 350 transmission, I know it will fit the 235 with an adapter but what rear end will work with this set up? Any info would be greatly appreciated, thank you.
Camaro or Nova rear ends would work just fine but think your goung to have to custom a drive shaft Sent from my DROID device using the TJJ mobile app
Do a search, plenty of post with different rear ends that will work Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
you can pull the pumkin from a 55-59 chevy pickup and it bolts right into the stock 54 housing, and retain your axles...quick and cheap
My 54 also has a 235 with a TH350 adapted to it. I just went down to my local pick-n-pull and took the rear end out of an S10. Fits perfectly and haven't had any issues. Just make sure its a 4x4 rearend and try and keep the gear ratio under 3.55. S10 will have the gear ratio code on a sticker in the glovebox.
Hey LB, interested in your comment on using a 55-59 pickup pumkin in a 53-54 passenger rear end... I don't have any experience with truck rearends, could you describe the switchover and list the needed parts. My investment in a '54 BelAir tudor includes recent 3" Posies springs, 1 1/2" blocks and short Jamco gas-shocks, so I'd to retain these parts when considering going to an open driveline setup. LB, thanks for your help, Dyno Dave
Has anyone swapped a rear end from a caprice. I have a 92 caprice rear that measures the exact same as my 54. It is coil spring but I'm bagging it and c-notching it anyway with a 4 link. Any thoughts? Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Thanks I will check again tomorrow. I think I just bought a set of tail lights from you off of eBay today. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
4x4 blazer is a perfect fit just make sure its not out of a zr2 and dont try to get fancy and buy one with disc brakes since it wont work with the frame width.
Yeah I was reading some posts on here and seen that the 4x4 will work but not to use disc brakes. I just had a rear from a caprice laying around. Fastcar was right the pattern was wrong. I know a guy that parts out s10s but its hard as hell. To get him to sell a rear. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
i tried a caprice once didn't workout. mine has a s10 4x4 now. the gm g body cars work . malibu, monte carlo, cutlass, regal. all coil springs so need mounts
Here are the RPO codes for S10 axle gear ratios. This information can be found in the glove box. GU4=3.08 GU5=3.23 GU6=3.42* GT4=3.73* GT5=4.10* HC4=4.56* G80=Gov. lock Sent via Illinois Bell Telephone Company's Car Radiotelephone
I'm thinking a 3.08 or 3.23. I'm not trying to put this all over the place but I'm going to put a tbi 350 in it with 4l60e trans and I want to get the best fuel mileage I can. I plan on driving this car alot. I want to be able to jump in it and drive it to Panama City from t.n. and get some decent fuel mileage on the family vacation. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. Take a trip to the local wrecking yard. I can find dozens of S10's in the yards I go to and they only cost between $40-$100. Sent via Illinois Bell Telephone Company's Car Radiotelephone
This is interesting...this is the first time I've heard this tip, and I was about to pull the trigger on an S10 rear I found, so even though I'm a few years late on this post, I'm glad I saw it when I did! Are you able to convert the drums to disk with a kit? What I mean is, is it only the OEM S10 disk brake setups that won't work, or will disks not work no matter what?
