Technical 51 Mercury chopped rear window options. Show me some pics

Discussion in 'Traditional Customs' started by jamcoupe, Jun 24, 2011.

  1. I've always preferred the 51 mercury back gl***. They are available in clear green and grey tints made from laminated gl*** that allows you to trim as needed
I did one last year where I took 2 inches of the top and changed the radius on the bottom so it could lay down and still use the original Chrome belt line

I believe Paul Bragg did this '49, for Frank Livingston. If I recall, rear window may be a '51 Plymouth (business coupe?).

Heres a pic of my 50. Stock rear window but take notice how it is slid up. Notice the big gap between the window and top of the trunk.

If you don't like the '51 gl*** laid down (and I'm with you on that one even if a couple of those posted are really nice), the key is to find one that is not too narrow. To my eyes the '41 Chevy and '51 Plymouth rear windows look too small, making the roof look fat. Might I suggest you start looking at photos of 1949-52 cars and when you find a window that looks good to you, do some measuring to see how it looks on the Merc roof and go from there?
I know 1949 or so Packard (the bathtub/elephant model) has a nice back gl***, but not sure it's wide enough to look good on a Merc roof.

I have a photo somewhere of a '59 Merc with a '40 Ford split back gl***. It looks terrible! Way too small.

The safest bet is the '50 Merc gl***, but I for one would love to see you find something unusual that looks "right" on there!

  8. Any old photos from back in the day of 50 Windows in 51 s ?

Somewhere in the Bible I recall reading "The perfect '51 Merc chop includes a '51 rear window"... it's right after the part where they talk about "give a man a chop versus teach a man to chop..."

  11. I think Mercury Charlie's car maybe the best '51 rear window chop:

This thread is over 2 years old.... I have since sold the windowless Mercury. For what its worth if i would have kept it i would found a 51 back gl*** to put back in it.

That's handy to know! can you cut the original gl***? I was thinking of shaving a bit off the corners when I chop it.

  16. There is a gl*** supply guy on ebay that sells them.

The stainless corner has definitely been trimmed.

Sorry I missed this thread and dug it up , maybe someone be interested seeing these pictures of how I cut and spliced my rear window frame together , I was in my late twenties (early 90ties) and dead set on doing all I could to make the -51 Merc rear window flow with the chopped top and still have enough room for the sidetrim below the side windows which I like . I also thought the roof was too long compered to the short trunk which worsen the rear window situation since the body gets wider the futher forward the rear window fram is positioned . When I saw how much the window frame missed the side sheet metal I cut the frame in the center , lined up the bottom parts with the rear , that made the upper part of the frame stick up so I cut that off , shorten it the same amount I widen it in the center (which made the stock rubber still work) and leaned it down to flow with the chopped top . these pictures show somewhat I did.

Nothing new on the back window for my '51. After a lot of thought on which way to go I went with the '50 back window. However, I kept all the length on the roof (4.5" front 5" rear chop) and also kept the drip rails. I added 2 inches to the rear quarter windows openings so they would have a more balanced profile and a nice transition to the C pillar. Also kept the flip out on the quarter windows. I added a slight reverse curve to the catwalk area to add flow to the trunk lid. Seem to come out ok.
