An Uncle I recently visited after a long time has a 55 F250 that I posted on Craigslist using his best knowledge of the truck. He has had it for many years and was told by parts stores, and possibly others that he had a 292 C.I. After getting the Serial Number, I'm finding conflicting information as to what he actually DOES have?

Although Google information is abundant for the F100, F250 info is slim(I ***umed the code numbers would be identical tho)
    Please read on

According to one (which I later questioned due to its source, but later wondered due to other info) his is a 272
    http://answers.edmunds.com/question....aspx/RecommendQuestion.aspx?questionid=44565

    According to http://www.blueovaltruckparts.com/t-Identify_Your_Truck.aspx#1953
    the 55 has a 239, and the 56 has a 272 ( both using the same "V" engine code)

AND now, for the twist, according to Wikipedia info

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_F-Series_second_generation
    End of Second Paragraph
    "In 1955 the 239 Y-block was replaced with the 272 and 292."

    His Serial Number is F25V5A-20327
any solid info would be appreciated :)

I've begun to believe the solid answer we need might only be found on the engine number itself, which could possibly differ with numbers from the rating plate.
My uncle is older and his sight isn't in its prime, and I'm not there to look for him.
Could anyone possibly tell me exactly where the engine numbers will be found on the 55 Ford V8 engines ?
Once again, any possible help will be greatly appreciated

Thanks racer, that's a good site too, but I've been through scores of them already. I'm hoping to find the Engine numbers, and a google search gave me this, which for the time is the best I have to get there with
    http://ford-y-block.com/Block%20identification.htm
I suppose casting numbers is all they had? ( I only worked much with 60's, 70s, 80s etc, and they had serial numbers, usually along the top of the block, visible at some point around the intake manifold) I was hoping that this might have a serial number too, as those later ones did, and found references saying the serial on the plate and the serial on the engine were the same, on an all original vehicle, but no information on where it might be located
I'm now wondering if the 55 v8 Y blocks had a serial number, and if so, where it would be located
Otherwise I'll give him the locations of the casting numbers and see if we canget a positive ID from that :)

The other thing to remember is that someone in the trucks nearly 60 years of existence could have very easily swapped or rebuilt the original Y-block to a later larger displacement one. The 12 volt alternator in the corner tells me that some one has messed with the truck so it is not too much of a stretch to imagine the motor getting changed / modified as well. Your only option to know truly what it is may be to drop the pan and measure bore and stroke.

    Good Luck.

On most Y blocks the only way to know for sure is to remove a head and measure. Don't use a stamped serial number on later Fords as proof of anything until the mid 1990's.

Thanks Merc, that's a great point which I hadn't very well considered till now. He bought it from the original owner I believe, and has told me the only thing that's not original was that 12V alternator system replacing a 6V generator.
With that in mind I'm more inclined to believe it may well be the 239 that's on the rating plate

thanks Don, what do you consider a "later Ford", the 55 as a later model?

I have found the trucks kept the smaller motors and was probably done to use up left over motors, the 292s were not installed in the trucks until 58 or 59 so if it does actually have a 292 the original motor has been replaced. I am suprised he was not told it was a 312.

Actually it had been sitting a long time when he bought it, and he did some tune up stuff, and I think it was in his search for parts was when they about decided it might be a 292
