im putting disk brakes on a 1956 olds i have heard that a 15X7 rims works but i wonder what backspacing minimum i need on those rims? thanks
I believe its not the back spacing but the shape of the rim just outside of the bolt circle/flange if you put a straight edge on the rotor where the wheel bolys on and run it up to the caliper you will see if it hits and or how much clearance you need. Thats what those disk brake spacers where used for years ago. Most wheels fit disk brakes now a days but there is always the exception. I hope I helped a little not confused the issue more. Pat
it would really be hard to confuse me more being im confused already...when i started to ask questions some people would say if your original rim is 15 inches your good to go..then others said well it depends on your wheels backspacing..then others said as long as your rims are a 15x7 thats what you want...good grief..im just looking for someone that can say for example (get a 15x7 rim with a 4 inch backspacing)or something...there has to be a standard..after all rims have rim height width and backspacing...help
I have disk brakes on the front of my 54 Chevy and it has the original 15 inch wheels. I had to use a aluminum spacer to clear the calipers and it works just fine. Maybe try that
They say a man with too many watches never knows what time it really is. The best thing to do is measure. Get your brakes on and measure. Go to the bone yard and grab a few samples. There are standards and when you build custom stuff the standards don't apply anymore because its custom. See how that works. Maybe you'll get lucky and a guy who's already done what you want to do will see this and help out. Problem is, he may not see it because of the new segregation and how he may be viewing the Hamb.
early 15" wheels are not designed to clear disc brakes, most newer and aftermarket wheels wll clear the calipers due to the shape of the wheel
thanks for the info..i had bought 4 1994 chev truck rims that were 15X7 in vegas on craigslist..had a friend pick them up..got them to my house to find that 2 were 15X7 with a 4 inch backspacing and 2 were 15X6and a half and those rims two had different back spacing...rrrr i just figured i would keep the 2 15X7 rims and go to the junk yard and get 2 more like that...ps i dont have the brakes yet just was trying to think ahead..so much for that...doh
